David Barbour (1952–2026) leaves an extraordinary legacy as an artist, photographer, mentor, and champion of the arts. In addition to the profound impact of his photography practice, we gratefully acknowledge his generosity in donating more than 150 photographs to the City of Ottawa Art Collection. This remarkable gift ensures that his work will be preserved and accessible for future generations.

The artworks held within the City of Ottawa Art Collection span several decades of David's career and showcase the breadth and depth of his artistic vision. They include some of his most celebrated images from the Havana series, compelling examples of his long-standing street photography practice, and works from his more recent series, Home, which reflects his continued curiosity, sensitivity, and engagement with the world around him. Together, these photographs document both everyday life and extraordinary moments with the empathy, humanity, and keen observational eye that defined his work.

Through this significant contribution to the City of Ottawa Art Collection, David's photographs will continue to enrich public understanding and appreciation of photography as an art form. His images stand as a lasting testament to his talent, generosity, and commitment to capturing the people, places, and stories that shaped his artistic journey. His legacy will continue to inspire artists, photographers, and audiences for years to come.

The City of Ottawa extends its congratulations to Marie-Jeanne Musiol on being awarded a 2026 Governor General Award for Visual and Media Arts.

Marie-Jeanne Musiol's photo installations have evolved from archeological itineraries to exploring the nature of energy. While working in Auschwitz in the 1990s, she experienced the limits of photographic representation and began searching for a more direct way to express the felt presence. Her more recent work probes the light fields surrounding plants, speaking to the importance of magnetic fields as carriers of information and the holographic nature of the universe.

Congratulations to all the 2026 Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts recipients: Chung-Im Kim, Roger Lee, Faye HeavyShield, Carole Itter, Zacharias Kunuk, Lyne Lapointe, Marie-Jeanne Musiol, and Skawennati! This prestigious honor is bestowed to artists who have demonstrated profound artistic merit in their work and who have made outstanding contributions to the visual and media arts landscape in Canada.

The Public Art Program team is saddened to learn of the recent passing of Ottawa photographer David Barbour. Many members of our team, past and present, had the privilege of working with David on a wide range of projects over the years. We are grateful to have known him as an artist, a freelance photographer, and a respected member of the community.

David contributed to numerous photographic assignments for the City of Ottawa, documenting exhibitions and gallery events, public art commissions, and artworks in the City of Ottawa Art Collection. He also generously shared his expertise as a member of numerous artwork selection panels as well as participating on the Donation Review Committee for many years.

David's warmth, kindness, and generosity of spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him. A gifted teacher, he was always eager to share his knowledge, passions, and the occasional story about seeing Led Zeppelin in concert in the 1970s. His ability to put people at ease in front of the camera is reflected in the thousands of photographs he took throughout his distinguished career.

David's contributions to Ottawa's arts community and the relationships he built along the way will be remembered with great appreciation. He will be deeply missed.

//

As part of the LRT Stage 2 project at Sherbourne Station, two new art benches designed by emerging Anishinabe Algonquin artists have been installed in the Byron Linear Tramway Park. The benches are located on either side of Westminster Ave in the park.

Artist Sylvia Tennisco designed her bench, Sturgeon, to represent the importance of sturgeon to the Anishinabe Algonquin people, especially before major dam projects took place in the Ottawa River. Artist Jade Rogers-Baptiste's bench represents the Seven Grandfather Teachings, each symbolized by the footprints of different sacred animals. Together, the benches represent the long-standing presence of the Anishinabe Algonquin people on this land, and the traditional teachings of Anishinabe Algonquin life.

The artists received mentorship from Algonquin artist Claude Latour. Third Way Creative oversaw this project alongside the Public Art Program, which included extensive engagement in the Bay Ward community.
