The festival is presented by the European Union through its Delegation to Canada and the EU Member States Embassies in partnership with Vision Méditerranéenne and the Canadian Film Institute.

🧇Belgium has a rich waffle tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, these simple preparations have evolved into a refined element of Belgian culinary heritage.

🇧🇪 Today, two varieties are especially well known worldwide: the light and airy Brussels waffle, popularised internationally during Expo 58, and the richer, sweeter Liège waffle, characterised by its caramelised pearl sugar.

🧇La Belgique possède une riche tradition de la gaufre qui remonte au Moyen Âge. Au fil des siècles, ces préparations simples sont devenues un élément raffiné du patrimoine culinaire belge.

🇧🇪 Aujourd’hui, deux variétés sont particulièrement reconnues dans le monde : la gaufre de Bruxelles, légère et aérée, popularisée à l’international lors de l’Expo 58, ainsi que la gaufre de Liège, qui est plus riche et sucrée, caractérisée par ses perles de sucre caramélisées.

In a Belgian asylum center, Jahia leads a quiet, cautious life with her traumatized mother. Everything changes when the spirited Mila arrives. Drawn to each other, the two girls forge a fragile bond that brings warmth and resilience to an environment marked by fear and uncertainty. Jahia starts cooking to comfort her mother, while Mila awaits the imminent verdict that will decide her asylum application. Their friendship becomes a refuge, a space where hope can breathe despite the shadows of exile. With sensitivity and restraint, Olivier Meys crafts a tender story, reminiscent of the Dardenne brothers, about belonging, childhood solidarity, and the fragile balance between security and loss.

Jahia se met à cuisiner pour réconforter sa mère, tandis que Mila attend le verdict imminent qui décidera de sa demande d'asile. Leur amitié devient un refuge, un espace où l'espoir peut respirer malgré les ombres de l'exil. Avec sensibilité et retenue, Olivier Meys façonne un récit tendre, à la manière des frères Dardenne, sur l'appartenance, la solidarité enfantine et l'équilibre fragile entre sécurité et perte.

De twee meisjes voelen zich tot elkaar aangetrokken en smeden een fragiele band die warmte en veerkracht brengt in een omgeving die gekenmerkt wordt door angst en onzekerheid. Jahia begint te koken om haar moeder te troosten, terwijl Mila wacht op de uitspraak die over haar asielaanvraag zal beslissen. Hun vriendschap wordt een toevluchtsoord, een plek waar hoop kan ademen ondanks de schaduwen van ballingschap. Met gevoeligheid en ingetogenheid creëert Olivier Meys een teder verhaal, dat doet denken aan de gebroeders Dardenne, over erbij horen, solidariteit in de kindertijd en het fragiele evenwicht tussen veiligheid en verlies.

It is a reminder of how migratory movements shape economies, cultures, and societies around the world. As lands of immigration, 🇧🇪Belgium and 🇨🇦Canada have benefited from the valuable contributions of many migrants from around 🌍the world. Since the second half of the 19th century, many Belgians have migrated to Canada and left their mark on the country. In this picture (circa 1960), you can see Belgian families 👪 visiting their immigrant relatives who had settled in southern Ontario.

🗓Aujourd'hui, 18 décembre, nous célébrons la Journée internationale des migrants, une occasion de rendre hommage aux migrations qui façonnent notre monde. Elle nous rappelle à quel point les mouvements migratoires influencent les économies, les cultures et les sociétés à travers le monde. En tant que pays d'immigration, la Belgique et le Canada ont bénéficié des précieuses contributions de nombreux migrants venus du 🌍monde entier. Depuis la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, de nombreux Belges ont émigré au Canada et y ont laissé leur empreinte. Sur cette photo (vers 1960), vous pouvez voir des familles 👪belges rendant visite à leurs proches venus s’installer dans le sud de l'Ontario.

Het herinnert ons eraan hoezeer migratiebewegingen economieën, culturen en samenlevingen over de 🌍 hele wereld beïnvloeden. Als immigratielanden hebben België en Canada geprofiteerd van de waardevolle bijdragen van talrijke migranten uit de hele wereld. Sinds de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw zijn veel Belgen naar Canada geëmigreerd en hebben daar hun stempel gedrukt. Op deze foto (rond 1960) ziet u Belgische families👪die hun familieleden bezoeken die zich in het zuiden van Ontario hebben gevestigd.
