As we reach the end of Governor General Mary Simon’s mandate, we want to express our pride and pleasure in having worked with Her Excellency on the creation of her coat of arms. These were embroidered onto an amauti that she wore to the coronation of King Charles III in 2023.

Comme nous arrivons à la fin du mandat de la gouverneure générale Mary Simon, nous tenons à exprimer notre fierté et notre plaisir d’avoir travaillé avec Son Excellence à la création de ses armoiries. Celles-ci ont été brodées sur un amauti qu’elle a porté lors du couronnement du roi Charles III en 2023.

Today, we are celebrating our 38th anniversary! The Canadian Heraldic Authority came into being thanks in large part to the efforts over many years of the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada, which celebrated its 60th anniversary earlier this week.

Aujourd’hui, nous célébrons notre 38e anniversaire! L’Autorité héraldique du Canada a vu le jour en grande partie grâce aux efforts déployés pendant de nombreuses années par la Société royale d’héraldique du Canada, qui a célébré son 60e anniversaire plus tôt cette semaine.

This past weekend, the Chief Herald of Canada gave a keynote speech to the Ottawa branch of the Monarchist League on “The Canadian Crown made visible: Symbols of Canada.”

The heralds of the CHA are very happy to announce the appointment of Cathy Bursey-Sabourin as Fraser Herald Emerita. This is only the fourth herald emeritus appointment to have been made since the creation of the CHA in 1988.

Les hérauts de l’AHC sont très heureux d’annoncer la nomination de Cathy Bursey-Sabourin en tant que héraut Fraser émérite. Il s’agit seulement de la quatrième nomination d’un héraut émérite depuis la création de l’AHC en 1988.

The polar bear is often used in Canadian heraldry as a national, regional, provincial or territorial emblem.

L’ours polaire est souvent utilisé en héraldique canadienne comme emblème national, régional, provincial ou territorial.

Instead of more general symbols of Canada, many choose to use local emblems to represent their identity. As the official bird of Quebec, the snowy owl often serves to represent the province in Canadian heraldry.

Au lieu de symboles canadiens généraux, plusieurs choisissent des emblèmes locaux pour représenter leur identité. Oiseau officiel du Québec, le harfang des neiges sert souvent à représenter la province en héraldique canadienne.

Our last legendary Canadian creature is the sasquatch, which was used by Brendan L’Heureux to represent British Columbia.

Notre dernière créature légendaire canadienne est le sasquatch, utilisé par Brendan L’Heureux pour représenter la Colombie-Britannique.

Continuing with the theme of legendary creatures in Canadian heraldry, the City of Penticton has the Ogopogo as one of its supporters. The creature is said to live in the Okanagan Lake on whose shores Penticton is situated.

Nous poursuivons le thème de créatures légendaires en héraldique canadienne. Pour l’un de ses supports, la ville de Penticton a choisi Ogopogo. Cette créature habiterait dans le lac Okanagan sur les rives desquelles Penticton se situe.

Heralds dig deep to find diverse ways to express Canadian identity. Here is an example showcasing dinosaurs! These supporters are hybrid creatures combining a Chinese dragon with an Albertosaurus to represent the province of this former lieutenant governor of Alberta.

Les hérauts fouillent en profondeur pour découvrir des façons diversifiées d’exprimer l’identité canadienne. Voici un exemple mettant en vedette des dinosaures! Ces supports sont des créatures hybrides qui combinent les caractéristiques d’un dragon chinois et un Albertosaurus pour représenter la province de cet ancien lieutenant-gouverneur de l’Alberta.

Our final example of geology in Canadian heraldry is found in the arms of the City of Percé, which features the famous Percé Rock formation in the Gaspé Peninsula.

Notre dernier exemple d’élément géologique dans l’héraldique canadienne est retrouvé dans les armoiries de la ville de Percé, qui affichent le célèbre îlot du rocher Percé dans la péninsule gaspésienne.
