When it comes to requalifying CO₂ cylinders—especially for fire extinguishers or compressed gas use—understanding the difference between water jacket testing, proof pressure testing, and ultrasonic examination helps you choose the proper method for safety and compliance. Water jacket testing measures volumetric expansion under pressure, proof pressure checks for visible leaks or deformation using simpler equipment, and ultrasonic testing scans the cylinder wall without pressurizing it.

In Canada, most commercial CO₂ fire extinguishers require water jacket testing, and ultrasonic options may apply for certain aluminum or specialized cylinders.
