So far this year, we’ve had 20 Barred Owls come through our doors with a variety of injuries. Many have since recovered and been released, while these four are in the final stage of rehabilitation.
At this stage, they have plenty of space to fly, build their strength, and rebuild their flight muscles before they’re ready to return to the wild.
Barred Owls are generally one of the more laid-back owl species, which allows us to house multiple individuals together when appropriate. This gives them the opportunity for social interaction while they recover!
When patients of the same species are housed together, each one receives a temporary identification band so we can keep track of who’s who (no pun intended!). This is especially important when it comes time for release, as we want to make sure each patient returns to the area where they were originally found.
We can’t wait to see these four take flight again soon!
