The start of cool weather means snakes and turtles are on the move and making their way back to their hibernation areas. Unfortunately, this sometimes means needing to cross the road to get there. Please keep an eye out for increased reptile activity on roads, and stop to help them across if safe to do so. Both of these snakes were escorted by Good Samaritans who stopped to make sure they safely crossed the road! Even if we can’t pick the snake or turtle up, we can still pull over to make sure they make it across safely! Miigwetch for helping our reptiles!🐢🐍

We are coming to the end of our turtle hatchling season, with the last few clutches finishing up. Miigwetch to everyone who participated in our community release events and submitted nesting turtle sightings! We protected close to 1000 eggs this year largely because of the community’s continued interest and help in making the program successful! 🐢

This week we had the opportunity to share some of the great Massasauga Rattlesnake (Zhiishiigwe) conservation work we do on Wasauksing! This will be featured in an upcoming documentary about Massasaugas, so stay tuned for updates!

Have you seen a strange lifted dog house recently in the community and thought what’s that? It’s our first recently installed bat condo! This condo will hopefully provide safer roost habitat for bats and encourage bats that roost in roofs and siding in the community to switch spots, especially if they’re displaced. Stay tuned for events next summer aimed to see how many bats are using the condo! 🦇🦇
