Good Morning Tri-Port!

Last night we assisted in the release of a deer who had his antlers tangled in a soccer net. When we arrived on scene, some folks were already trying to untangle him and so we further assisted in the effort until he was free.

After the incident, we called the situation into conservation, to let them know that there was still a small piece of netting left on the antlers but it was not impeding his ability to eat or move. We wanted to have this on record as I'm sure others who come across him may call this in.

After speaking with conservation, we now know that they would have much preferred to attend the scene, sedate the animal and fully free him from entrapment. We were unaware that the CO would attend to this at night, but that's on us for not calling and asking. At the time, the deer had already been trapped for a while, the finder was waiting for someone to help in the dark and people were already trying to set him free.

We believe all involved did the best they could with the situation and information they had.

However, for future entrapments, please call conservation first! Even before posting on FB!

We are not a substitute for CO at all and we don't pretend to be. We try and lend a hand to animals in distress where we can.

HEADS UP PORT MCNEILL:

There is a very stressed out male deer with a small portion of soccer netting wrapped around its antlers running in town somewhere.

It was just freed from being extremely tangled.

It has been called in to conservation. But please keep and eye out for it.

The deer will lose his antlers and be free of the netting but if you see it impeding his ability to eat or move, we need to know!

Thank you.

Please, I'm begging you... If you see a fawn alone, WAIT AND WATCH. Or call someone who knows more about wildlife than you do.

DO NOT TOUCH, REMOVE OR PICK UP BABY!
