On Oct. 10, at approximately 1:30 p.m., RCMP were alerted to a break and enter that was occurring at a commercial business on 4th Avenue Northeast in Portage la Prairie.

RCMP converged on the area and flew a drone overhead, locating the suspect as he hid in deep brush just northeast of the business. The suspect, who resisted arrest, was safely taken into custody. He was transported to hospital after appearing to be in distress, then released without need for treatment and taken into police custody.

RCMP Police Dog Services also assisted in the investigation.

On Oct. 4, at approximately 8:15 p.m., Amaranth RCMP saw a vehicle travelling south through the community on Highway 50 at a high rate of speed.

RCMP attempted to pull over the vehicle, activating its emergency lights and siren, but the vehicle sped away. Out of concern for public safety, RCMP did not pursue.

A short time later, the officer was responding to an unrelated case when he saw the same vehicle in the ditch near Sandy Bay First Nation. The vehicle had rolled.

The 35-year-old female driver was ejected from the vehicle. She was transported via air ambulance to hospital in Winnipeg, where she was in critical but stable condition at last report.

Two female passengers – a 38-year-old from Sandy Bay and a 36-year-old from Amaranth – were taken to hospital via ground ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 42-year-old Amaranth female declined treatment at the scene.

RCMP are investigating.

Ongoing efforts to curb retail theft prompted Portage la Prairie RCMP to launch two enforcement blitzes in the city last month.

Local officers focused on retail theft enforcement on Sept. 12 and again on Sept. 26, resulting in a number of arrests for theft under $5,000. The arrests included:
• A 37-year old Portage la Prairie female who left a business on the 2100-block of Saskatchewan Avenue West without paying for several items. She was released on an undertaking.
• Two males – a 22-year-old from Sandy Bay First Nation and a 17-year-old from Portage la Prairie – were arrested after a report of shoplifting at a store on the 2200-block of Saskatchewan Avenue West. Both were held in custody on theft and breach of court order charges.
• A 33-year-old female who was arrested and charged with both theft and failure to comply offences following an incident at a store on the 2300-block of Sissons Drive. She was held for court, as she had been out on bail following previous shoplifting charges from the same business.
• A 44-year-old Portage la Prairie female, who was arrested following a shoplifting incident at a store on the 2100-block of Saskatchewan Avenue West. She was subsequently released on an undertaking.
• A 46-year-old Portage la Prairie male arrested for shoplifting, following a theft on the 2300-block of Sissons Drive. During the arrest, officers found the suspect carrying a concealed weapon when prohibited to do so. The suspect was remanded into custody.
