Life at the RCMP Academy means preparing for the realities of frontline policing, and that includes the weather.

Because training happens year-round here, cadets can experience all four seasons Saskatchewan has to offer. From hot summer days to snowy winter mornings, every season brings new challenges and of course learning opportunities.

Thankfully, this autumn has treated us well so far, with plenty of sunshine, colourful leaves, and beautiful days in Regina. 🍁🍂

Welcome to another edition of – this one is all about troop jobs for . Every new troop that arrives for training will have up to 32 cadets, all of whom must form a cohesive team throughout the . This cohesion fosters high-functioning team performance, esprit de corps, and responsibility.

In the first week of training, a new troop must start to work together. A big part of building a successful troop begins with the allocation of troop jobs to members of the troop. One such position is the Right Marker, who is the leader and organizer for the troop. There are liaison positions for all skills units, as well as for troop health and wellness. These cadets are tasked with ensuring the members of their troop are prepared for each class and are provided support to build physical and mental resiliency throughout training. Those that are musically inclined may even find themselves in the Depot cadet band and will perform during parades and for special events.

The troop jobs are vital to the cohesion of every troop at Depot. The support cadets receive from their peers through their assigned positions promotes teamwork, as well as providing cadets with the recipe for success at Depot and in their careers with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Each year, on the last Sunday of September, Canadians come together to honour police and peace officers who have died in the line of duty.

Across the country, flags are lowered to half-mast, memorial services are held, and people take time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities.
The RCMP Academy was honoured to take part in Regina's memorial service this past Sunday, standing alongside our fellow first responders to pay tribute to those who served Canadians with courage, dedication and commitment. Assistant Commissioner Mike Lokken, Commanding Officer of Depot Division laid a wreath on behalf of the RCMP.

We were also honoured to participate in the unveiling of Regina's new Fallen Protective Services Memorial. The monument serves as a permanent tribute recognizing Saskatchewan firefighters, police officers, paramedics, correctional workers, emergency communications personnel, conservation officers and other protective services professionals who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Today, we were honoured to gather at the place that connects all Mounties to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Since 1935, the RCMP National Memorial Service has been held each year on the second Sunday of September, bringing us together to remember regular members, special constables, auxiliary constables, and civilian members who gave their lives in service to Canada.

While no new names were added to the RCMP Cenotaph this year, it has been a difficult year for policing across Canada. We have seen RCMP officers injured in the line of duty and have mourned the loss of officers from other police services. These events are a solemn reminder of the risks faced by those who answer the call to serve and protect our communities.

To everyone in attendance from near and far, and those who watched online, thank you. Your presence, support, and commitment to remembering our fallen are deeply valued. We will remember them.

Welcome to another edition of – Last time, we covered police powers of arrest under section 495(1) of the Criminal Code. Today, we're looking at arrest warrants.

Section 495(1)(c) C.C. details when a police officer may arrest an individual for whom a warrant of arrest has been issued. Did you know that warrants:

• Are issued by a court and give police the authority to arrest someone for the offence listed on the warrant.
• Have jurisdiction or ‘radius’ (e.g. Saskatchewan-wide). This means that if the person is located by police in Saskatchewan, they can be arrested.
• Can be either endorsed (person will generally be released with a new court date) or unendorsed (person will usually be held for a court appearance).
The last, trickier, part of the warrant process is used when a person named on a warrant is found outside the warrant's jurisdiction.
• For example: If a person wanted on a Saskatchewan-wide warrant is located in Alberta, police no longer have basic powers of arrest under section 495(1)(c) C.C.
• However, if the offence is indictable (including hybrid offences), police may still be able to arrest under section 495(1)(a), since it is reasonable to believe the person committed the offence identified on the warrant.

It is important for to train and fully understand their powers of arrest so they can make quick, lawful and correct decisions in the field.

Serving our communities goes beyond the uniform. The is proud to participate in the campaign in support of Canadian Blood Services.

Today, some of our Depot members rolled up their sleeves to donate blood, helping ensure this life-saving resource is available for patients across Canada.

This campaign brings together RCMP detachments, police services, fire departments, EMS/paramedic services, and STARS Air Ambulance in a friendly competition to help patients across Saskatchewan and beyond.

Together, we can help save lives, one donation at a time.
