🧠 October is ADHD Awareness Month!

What is ADHD?

ADHD stands for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a neurodevelopmental condition, meaning it affects how the brain develops and functions. ADHD is often inherited and can affect both children and adults.

ADHD is more than simply being distracted or hyperactive. It can affect things like focus, organization, memory, impulse control, and managing everyday tasks.

There are 3 types of ADHD:

🔹 Inattentive: Difficulty with focus, organization, memory, and staying on task.

🔹 Hyperactive-Impulsive: Fidgeting, restlessness, acting quickly, or having difficulty waiting or thinking before acting.

🔹 Combined: A combination of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.

Common ADHD myths

❌ “ADHD is caused by bad parenting.”
ADHD is not caused by parenting styles.

❌ “Everyone has a little ADHD.”
Everyone can forget things or have trouble focusing sometimes. ADHD symptoms are more persistent and can significantly affect daily life.

❌ “ADHD only affects children or boys.”
ADHD can affect people of all ages and genders. Many adults, including women, are diagnosed later in life.

❌ “ADHD medication is addictive.”
When prescribed and properly managed by a healthcare professional, ADHD medication can be an important part of treatment for some people.

Why does ADHD Awareness Month matter?

There is still a lot of misunderstanding about ADHD. When ADHD isn't understood, people may struggle at school, work, in relationships, and in everyday life without getting the support they need.

Early diagnosis and the right support can make a big difference. 💙

Treatment and support can include medication, behavioral strategies, coaching, education, accommodations, healthy sleep, physical activity, nutrition, and stress management.

ADHD looks different for everyone, and having ADHD doesn't mean someone can't succeed. Understanding, support, and the right tools can help people recognize their strengths and thrive.

💙 Let’s spread awareness, understanding, and acceptance this ADHD Awareness Month!

🌳 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Yesterday, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Municipality of Five Rivers held our annual Tree Planting Ceremony at the Beersville Fire Hall.

Thank you to everyone who joined us as we came together to honour the children who never returned home, Survivors, their families, and Indigenous communities, while reflecting on our shared responsibility to advance reconciliation.

Mayor Kevin Scully planted the tree, with Deputy Mayor April Warman, former Mayor Tina Beers, and Charles LeBlanc from the Beersville Fire Hall joining him in filling in the soil.

We sincerely thank everyone who attended and helped make this meaningful ceremony a part of our community’s commitment to remembrance, learning, and reconciliation. 🧡
