🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is observed on September 30 as a way to honour survivors of Residential Schools along with their family and community members, and to remember children who did not return home. This year, we want to share a project close to our roots: the Hamilton Community Garden Fruit Pathway 🍓 This project fills neglected corners with native food plants anyone can pause to sample, including: salmonberry, huckleberry, red flowering currant, native strawberries and more!

These are Indigenous food crops that have nourished Coast Salish communities on this land for thousands of years. Colonization displaces Indigenous food crops, along with the people and knowledge systems that tend them. Bringing native plants back into our gardens is one way thatUrban Bounty is committed torebuilding indigenous foodscapes.

We continue to be grateful to the land and the Indigenous knowledge keepers and land defenders who care for it.

It’s time to save seeds at the Urban Bounty Seed Demonstration Garden!

Here is an update on what seeds are ready to be saved, and what plants need a bit more time.

We planted only self-pollinating varieties this year, such as tomatoes, lettuce, peas, beans, dill and chickpeas, and there’s a good reason why. In a community garden, dozens of different plant varieties are growing side by side, which makes cross-pollination a real risk for seed savers. Luckily self-pollinating plants produce seeds that are true to type, year after year.

The seeds we save from our Seed Demonstration Garden will be used to restock our Seed Library! Interested in trying out seed saving? Become a Seed Library Member and get access to all these amazing seeds. Click the link in our bio for more information.

Stay tuned for more information on how to harvest and save tomato seeds!

As harvest season peaks, gardeners think ahead to fall. It's time to plant cover crops to keep your soil protected over the winter! Cover crops are plants that regenerate the soil as they grow. Cover crops work to suppress weeds, aerate soil, and boost your garden’s sustainability and productivity.

To learn more about Urban Bounty's cover crop program and buy seed packets, check out our website shop!
