π₯ CATEGORY 2 OPEN BURNING β OTTER POINT π₯
Effective 12:00 p.m. β Friday, October 2, 2026
After taking the past few days to carefully evaluate conditions in Otter Point, we have seen the fire danger rating remain LOW for several consecutive days, along with cooler temperatures and good overnight recovery.
Based on these conditions, Category 2 open burning will be permitted within the Otter Point Fire Protection District effective at 12:00 p.m. today, October 2, 2026.
β οΈ A BURNING PERMIT IS REQUIRED
For the month of October, the Otter Point Fire Department will be issuing permits for all Category 2 open burning. This allows us to help ensure residents understand safe burning practices, current conditions and the responsibilities associated with open burning.
To obtain a permit:
π Stop by the Otter Point Fire Hall, MondayβFriday, 8:30 a.m.β5:00 p.m.
π Call the Fire Hall at 250-642-6211
Permits may be restricted, suspended or cancelled at any time should weather or fire conditions deteriorate.
What is a Category 2 Open Fire?
Under the CRD Fire Regulation Bylaw No. 2, 2022 (Bylaw No. 4489), a Category 2 fire is generally used for burning vegetative debris and may consist of:
π₯ One pile no larger than 2 metres high Γ 3 metres wide, or
π₯ Two piles burning at the same time, with each pile no larger than 2 metres high Γ 3 metres wide.
When burning, remember:
β’ Maintain at least 10 metres clearance from buildings, structures, fences, trees, hedges and property lines.
β’ Never leave your fire unattended.
β’ Maintain an adequate fuel break around the burn area.
β’ Have appropriate firefighting tools and an adequate water supply immediately available.
β’ Do not burn green debris, leaves, garbage, construction materials or other prohibited materials.
β’ Ensure the fire is completely extinguished and cold before leaving the area.
β’ Provincial Open Burning Smoke Control Regulations and venting requirements must also be followed where applicable.
A permit does not override provincial regulations or restrictions. Where different regulations apply, the most restrictive requirement must be followed.
For current burning information, permit requirements and regulations, please visit the Otter Point Volunteer Fire Department website or contact the Fire Hall at 250-642-6211.
