Helping a member of the Community clean up someone else’s mess? Double check.

A good nights work. Apologies again for the late notice, hoping we didn’t cause undue concern.

Good evening. The SouthSide Fire Department will be assisting with Community fuel management and will be burning a pile adjacent to the boat launch tonight at 730 PM.

I apologize for the late notice! Smoke and some flame will be visible, but we will be on hand to manage and the weather is favourable.

Thank you!

What did you do this long weekend?

If you were a member of the SouthSide Volunteer Fire Department, you spent part of your weekend responding to a fire.
An observant Community member and some local help had the fire nearly out before the SVFD arrived to fully extinguish and mop up.

Thank you to those members of our Community, and the SVFD members who responded.

It is uncertain how this fire started, whether lightning from the previous evening or human caused. In either case, a caring Community came together to get it dealt with!

Have a safe and enjoyable long weekend!

Firefighters George, Gio, and Deputy Chief Logan getting their hands dirty last week.

This is an important step in wildfire. Once the flames are out, this activity is called Cold Trailing, where the team turns over areas that were smouldering and soaks the material to ensure there is no residual heat that may re-light later.

You: I want to help the Community, but I can’t be a firefighter and run into the bush to put out flames.
Me: I haven’t run anywhere in a loooonnng time. There are many ways to support the Southside Volunteer Fire Department. Not everyone needs to put on an SCBA or be at the end of a hose.
We have volunteers who specialize in driving and operating pump trucks. We have volunteers who help us maintain our equipment. We have volunteers who help,Administer our records. We have volunteers who plow our driveway at the hall. We have members who help us with fundraising. We have members who keep our snack cupboard stocked and ready.

If you are looking to help the Community and be part of a larger group, we can find something that matches your skill and experience. Send us a message and let’s get to know each other!

On Thursday evening, the Southside Vilunteer Fire Department - once again supported by Southside Community members and the Chinook Emergency Response Society - attended a holdover fire west of the Grassy Plains Church.
Observant and quick reporting and a fast response prevented this flare up from becoming anything serious.
This video shows some of the volunteers returning from the event that took them out of their homes and away from plans to help our Community!

Thank you everyone for making this such a great place to live!

Thank you to our diligent and dedicated Community members! In a great example of working together, last night a lighting started wildfire near Blaney Rd was reported, actioned, and extinguished before it could grow into anything more substantial.

The SouthSide Volunteer Fire Department, the Chinook Emergency Response Society, and the local residents came together and worked well.

We had offers of assistance from the BC Wildfire Service who remained on standby as SVFD Chief Evan Plesko assessed the situation. Through Community and SVFD action, the BCWS was freed up to deploy to other starts.

Special thanks to those who helped us find and access a safe way into the fire!

The SVFD gets together every Tuesday evening at 7 PM. We practice skills, complete training, and maintain equipment.
For a team that has a lower call frequency, these practices are essential to keep our skills sharp and our equipment ready.

If you would like to learn more about our team, you can message through this page, or stop by on Tuesday night!
This evening, we will be finishing off the car that someone parked in front of our hall…..

Thank you to Ky Bigler who is an important supporter of the SouthSide Fire Department, the donation of vehicles for us to practice on is greatly appreciated!
