❤️ In St. Marys, we remember.

We have three Remembrance Week activities planned, starting Saturday, November 7 with Veteran’s Decoration Day at the St. Marys Cemetery.

The St. Marys Legion will host a ceremony and parade on November 8, and Mayor Strathdee will lead a Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11.

The St. Marys Museum exhibit titled 'Service on the Sea: St. Marys and the Royal Canadian Navy’ will open on November 11 and will be available for viewing during the Museum’s regular hours until November 2027.

People with intellectual disabilities face continual pressure to be independent in a world where everyone relies on others.

Instead interdependence should be the goal.
..

ID: The headline reads “You are not independent either”. Two columns compare “You” - someone fixes your teeth, cuts your hair and fixes your car, labelled “Independent” - with “Him”- needs help to cut his nails, cook his meals and get around, labelled “Not independent.” A smiling man in a navy polo shirt appears below.

This Small Business Week, we celebrate inclusive workplaces that create opportunities for people with disabilities to succeed, and highlight the value, skills and talent they bring to the workforce.

At City of Toronto's Lil E Coffee Café, accessibility is built into the way staff are hired, trained and supported. The café works with community organizations to connect with candidates who face barriers to employment and provides practical supports such as accessible interviews, training, hands-on learning and workplace materials tailored to different learning styles.

"Accessibility should not be treated only as a feel-good idea,” says General Manager Caitlin Rutherford.

For Caitlin, accessibility often comes down to practical solutions. "A staff member found the font on a list too small, and the manager reprinted it in a larger font and laminated it again. That small change made it easier for the staff to use the material and do their job."

The benefits extend beyond employees. Customers have embraced the welcoming environment, with some describing the café as the best part of their day.

“One customer walks uphill for about 15 minutes ꟷ even though there are other coffee shops closer to him ꟷ because he just wants to talk with the staff and be part of the community here.”

Reflecting on the café's approach, Caitlin says, "When businesses treat accessibility as an investment, not a cost, they can build a stronger workplace; and together, a stronger community."

St. Marys Council has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the PC Connect partnership, resulting in the end of PC Connect service in St. Marys effective December 31, 2026.

Since launching in 2020, PC Connect has helped connect St. Marys residents with destinations across the region. The service has been supported through a combination of municipal contributions and provincial funding, which ended in 2025.

While the Town and its municipal partners have applied for additional provincial funding to continue the service, no funding decision has been received and existing funding expires December 31, 2026.

Council's decision was based on the rising municipal cost of the service and low ridership levels at St. Marys stops. Council has directed staff to explore options to help address local transportation needs, particularly for specialized trips such as medical appointments.

We recognize this change may impact residents who rely on the service and thank all riders for their support over the past six years.
