“It is destructive and tainting.” That’s how Sir Patrick Stewart described domestic violence in a 2006 video, remembering what he saw as a boy in a small house in Mirfield, Yorkshire.

His family announced on his Instagram that he died yesterday at home in Los Angeles, with his wife, Sunny, by his side, after a brief journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

He was 86.

Most of the world knew him as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Professor X. But he also did something famous men almost never do: He told the truth about the violence in his own childhood home, again and again, for decades, so survivors would know they weren’t alone.

Years later, he learned his father had come home from World War II with untreated combat trauma, and he spent the rest of his life supporting veterans’ mental health as well.

Understanding where the violence came from never meant excusing it. His family says he’ll be remembered for “the dignity, compassion and humanity he brought to every role — in his art and life.”

They also mentioned his beloved foster pit bulls, which feels exactly right.

We’ll remember the boy from Mirfield who grew up and refused to look away.

If you or someone you know needs help, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.

Stratford and Perth County are facing a reality we can no longer ignore. Hundreds of women, children—and often their pets—turn to local services every year looking for a safe place to go after experiencing violence in the home. Too many are met with long waitlists. Too many in our community are forced to choose between homelessness, poverty, or returning to someone who has harmed them.

As you are aware, we are in the final stages of our capital campaign to install 5 Tiny Homes in our backyard green space to increase our capacity to help families when they need us most. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed. For those of you who have not yet had the opportunity, we ask that you consider helping us reach our goal.

Donating is easy. Use the QR code below, which takes you to CanadaHelps, where a tax receipt will be issued immediately. We take e-transfers to [email protected] – make sure to include your name and address in the message field, and a tax receipt will be mailed out. Another option is cheque or cash to 67 Barron St., Stratford, ON N5A 6E7.

If you would like more information, please contact us at [email protected] or 519-273-7350. Let’s end 2026 with the knowledge that this community cares!
