Truth & Reconciliation Day events for students and the community This Friday marks the second-annual National Day for Truth & Reconciliation, and to recognize the day, numerous events are being held in Surrey and the Lower Mainland, as well as online, to acknowledge our country’s history with First Nations and residential schools.

Introducing Roxane Charles with TEAM Surrey Schools!

I am a mixed media artist, activist, curator, storyteller, and cultural historian of Strait Salish and European descent. I am a former councilor of the Semiahmoo Nation and active band member of Semiahmoo First Nation in Surrey, where I promote art, language, and culture. As an artist, I work with a wide range of media. I directly respond to the problems of colonialism, and document issues that reflect my life experiences such as spirituality, identity, urbanization, food security, resource extraction, trauma, and various forms of systemic violence. As a contemporary storyteller and cultural historian, my goal is to touch, move, and inspire others through my work. My work employs traditional Semiahmoo forms of knowledge such as visual representation, oral history, and ceremony. I have three children, two have been through the Surrey School system and one is currently enrolled. I have been an inclusion advocate since my own experience in secondary school when I noticed a gap in knowledge and helped develop the first Indigenous program. I am a youth coordinator and work with youth to develop leadership and facilitation skills. I want to be your, the students and community’s voice as a trustee for the Surrey Board of Education.
