When your child is sick with a cough, fever or runny nose, it can be hard to know what’s normal and when to seek care.

As respiratory illnesses continue to circulate, here's a helpful reminder from Dr. Navid Dehghani on what parents should watch for when children are feeling unwell.

If your child has symptoms like:
• Cough
• Congestion
• Runny nose
• Mild fever

Here is what you can do:
• Encourage rest
• Make sure they stay hydrated
• Keep them at home to recover

Seek urgent medical attention if your child:
• Is experiencing respiratory distress, such as shortness of breath, difficulty breathing or fast breathing
• Has a fever for five days or more
• Is very sleepy or fatigued, even when their fever is under control

A healthier winter starts now.

Simple actions can make a big difference this respiratory season.

Stay up to date on your flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, get RSV protection if eligible, wash your hands regularly and stay home when you're sick.

Maintaining healthy eating and physical activity and quality sleep can also help support your health through the fall and winter.

Looking to get your flu or COVID-19 vaccine? Appointments for the 2026–27 season can be booked through B.C.’s Get Vaccinated system starting October 13.

📩 Watch for a text or email with your personalized booking invitation.
📞 Call 1-833-838-2323 to register and book an appointment.
🏥 You can also check with your primary care provider about vaccine availability.

Today marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

We honour Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, their families and communities.

As we reflect, we are reminded that reconciliation is an ongoing journey.

It calls us to take action to ensure First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples feel respected, valued and supported when accessing care.

When health care workers experience traumatic or critical incidents on the job, Ceri—an Operational Stress Intervention (OSI) dog—is there to help.

Working alongside Fraser Health’s Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team, Ceri provides comfort, connection and calm during some of the toughest moments health care teams face.

“Ceri provides a way for staff to decompress after traumatic incidents,” says Shannon Walker, Ceri’s handler and a CISM client partner. “That in-the-moment physical interaction can provide a break from repetitive stressful thoughts and can help kick-start recovery.”

“It doesn’t matter what time of day I see this fella, I’m able to forget about everything else, have a few minutes of solace, and reconnect with myself,” says Delta Hospital Emergency Department manager Clay Gillrie.

Ceri’s placement was made possible through funding from Wounded Warriors Canada in partnership with BC & Alberta Guide Dogs, which bred, raised and professionally trained him for this important role.

Upgrades to the MRI at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre are complete and patients are now benefitting from faster scans and a more comfortable experience.

The upgraded MRI uses AI technology, improved imaging equipment and advanced software to create sharper, more detailed pictures of the body.

The $4.95 million investment in care is made possible through strong partnerships between Fraser Health, the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation and the Crystal Gala Foundation.

Through the generosity of local donors, a $1 million contribution was made by the Crystal Gala Foundation to make this project a reality.

Planning is underway to improve and expand Burnaby Hospital’s emergency department and surgical unit.

The improvements will include additional emergency treatment spaces, upgraded operating rooms and expanded areas for patients preparing for and recovering from surgery. Together, these changes will create more modern spaces for patients while better supporting the staff and medical staff who care for them every day.
