How do you conceptualize your ?

Imagine this scene: about 100 years ago, in the bush, in the Thunder Bay District. It's getting cold, the ground is frozen, and the snow is beginning to fly. A woman is walking alone. She's strong and dressed for the cold; she's done this before; this is her life's work. At the end of her walk is a lumber camp, or possibly a small farm. A safe place to rest, certainly, and to eat a hot meal. More importantly to her, it's a place where she can talk to the working people, women and men, about their lives and their working conditions, and encourage them to fight for better.

Sanna Kannasto (1878-1968) was inducted into the City of Thunder Bay's Women's History Exhibit today. She was a Finnish migrant, an organizer for the Socialist Party, one of the founders of the Finnish Organization of Canada, a feminist and labour organizer. She was harassed by the RCMP throughout her career, and destroyed most of her records because of ongoing police surveillance. Her impact is documented less well than she deserves, but she is remembered.

We're a nominee for the City of Thunder Bay's Arts and Heritage Awards, 2026!

The Listening to Women's History project was nominated in the Heritage category. This nomination reflects not just what the Archives has done over the past few years, but the work of women from the 1970s to present in gathering and preserving these stories.

Awards are given out on November 5. Fingers crossed!

Where should we even start with ?

There's a long and powerful history of protest and activism in Northwestern Ontario, and we're so proud that our archival collections contribute to people learning about that history.

The labour movement, including fighting for the rights of Injured Workers. Feminist organizing. Environmental research and awareness. Community and rights for LGBTQ+ people. The students, staff, and faculty at Lakehead University are part of these stories, as are many, many others.

Come talk to us about protests :)
