Lakehead Region Conservation Authority The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) is a community-based environmental agency. We also host annual public events and guest speakers.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) is a community-based environmental agency that provides services to our watershed residents. We are responsible for the management of renewable natural resources in our watershed. We offer a broad range of programs, including watershed management, flood forecasting, and environmental education. The LRCA provides opportunities for the public to learn from, enjoy and respect Ontario's natural environment. We improve quality of life by actively providing open space and protecting property from flooding and erosion, as well as restoring and conserving natural habitats. We offer field trips to our conservation areas and in-class programming. We offer several annual programs as well as information on what homeowners can do to maintain the optimal health of the Watershed. Whether you’re planting trees, developing your property, or enjoying our conservation areas, it is all our responsibility to be Watershed Stewards.

☀️ Feel Good Friday! ☀️Exciting updates at the Mountdale Boat Launch this month! We participated in an invasive species pull AND planted a fresh round of native plants! 🌱

We added a beautiful mix of native species to help improve habitat, support biodiversity, and stabilize the shoreline, including:

🌿 Pearly Everlasting
🌿 Silver Sage
🌿 White Sage
🌿 Flat-topped White Aster
🌿 Spotted Joe-Pye W**d
🌿 Black-eyed Susan
…and more!

A huge THANK YOU to all of our amazing volunteers who spent their beautiful fall Friday getting their hands dirty and getting these plants in the ground.

Further, thank you to our partners — the The City of Thunder Bay, InfoSuperior RAP, and Fort William First Nation for supporting this restoration project and helping us continue to improve our watershed.

We’d also like to thank the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources for providing funding to support this important restoration work!
A little planting goes a long way! 🌱💚

🍂 Step Into Nature! 🍂 As the days get shorter, trees slow down their production of chlorophyll—the green pigment that gives leaves their summer colour. As that green fades, vibrant yellow and orange pigments are revealed, creating the spectacular colours of fall.

Take a hike through one of the LRCA's 10 Conservation Areas and enjoy the science of the season while getting your body moving and your mind refreshed! 🥾🌲

🌱 Feel-Good Friday! 🌱

Our Stewardship Team has been busy getting their hands dirty at Hurkett Cove Conservation Area!

We’ve been planting native vegetation along the shoreline to help reduce erosion, improve water quality, and strengthen important shoreline habitat. As these plants grow, they’ll also provide valuable food, cover, and native seeds for our feathered friends.

A little planting today can make a big difference for the health and resilience of our watershed tomorrow. 🌱

Join the Thunder Bay Museum for the September presentation of our 2026–2027 Free Public Lecture series as we welcome Ryan Mackett for an exploration of the history of the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA). Lectures take place in person and will also be broadcast via Zoom.

Description:
Since 1954, the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) has led the conservation and protection of the Lakehead Watershed towards the vision of a healthy, safe and sustainable Lakehead Watershed for future generations. Learn how the Neebing Valley Conservation Authority evolved into the LRCA as we know it today, and how we will be evolving further into the future. From flood forecasting, water level monitoring and development regulations to land stewardship, environmental education, and, of course, recreation at our ten Conservation Areas, we will discuss the core roles and responsibilities of the Conservation Authority as well as the other programs we undertake for the enhancement and protection of our local natural resources.
