Halloween is just around the corner, and trick-or-treaters will soon be out collecting candy.
All children should be cautious before eating their treats, especially those with food allergies. Follow these important tips to help keep your child safe this Halloween:
1. Remind your child not to accept or eat anything that is not commercially wrapped or appears to have been tampered with.
2. Have dinner before heading out trick-or-treating so your child is less tempted to snack on treats along the way.
3. Do not allow your child to eat any treats until an adult has checked it.
4. Discard any homemade treats unless you know and trust the person who prepared them.
5. Examine commercially wrapped treats for tears, punctures, or small holes in the packaging. Throw away anything with damaged or loose wrapping.
6. Be cautious when giving young children treats that may pose a choking hazard (e.g., hard candies, gum, lolipops, chewy candies)
7. If your child has food allergies, read all ingredient labels carefully. Only allow treats with clearly listed ingredients, and avoid products with “may contain” allergy warnings.
8. When in doubt, throw it out! It's always better to be safe than sorry.
