Knock, knock. Who’s there? Fun. Fun who? Fungi! 🍄

September is National Mushroom Month, and the forest is showing off. Cooler nights and autumn rain wake up all kinds of fungi. From tiny and bright to weird and wonderful. They’re more than just photogenic 📸 Mushrooms also help recycle nutrients and keep the boreal forest thriving!

As you explore the park this month, keep an eye out for tiny orange pins on fallen logs to towering toadstools bright enough to stop you in your tracks.

These are the highlights of what we've seen so far at Kettle Lakes;
🍄 Orange waxcaps with a sluggy friend
🍄 A Painted Suillus among fallen leaves
🍄 Cluster of Bolete on pine needles
🍄 Coral Fungus shooting up from the ground

Show us what you have seen this September! 🍂

As you drive through Kettle Lakes Provincial Park, please slow down and stay alert for snakes and turtles on the road. 🐍

Many reptiles use warm pavement to move between forest and wetland, and a little extra care helps keep them safe. 🚗

Ever spot a big boulder in the forest and wonder how it got there?🤔

Well those big rocks are called glacial erratics! Rocks which were carried here by massive ice sheets during the last Ice Age. As glaciers moved, they picked up everything in their path, and when the ice melted, these travellers stayed behind.🪨

They’ve been sitting here for thousands of years, keeping the forest’s history rock solid… even if their journey was a little erratic.😂
