Today the national portrait of The Rt. Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada (2006–2015), was unveiled.

Official prime minister portraits are typically commissioned after a leader leaves office, allowing time for political distance and historical perspective, hence the timing now.

The portrait was painted by Canadian artist Phil Richards.

Harper had input into elements such as pose, attire, and symbolic details (including books), while the artist and commissioning institution guided the final composition to balance personal legacy with national history.

The House of Commons currently holds about 21 official prime minister portraits, part of a collection representing the 24 individuals who have served as prime minister since Confederation.

The portraits are one of my favourite displays in the House of Commons! I love this portrait! What do you think?

In the 2015 election, 3 kids who graduated from Kipling Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke were elected to the House of Commons. Kirsty, Karen, and I thought that was pretty cool. My condolences to Kirsty’s family and colleagues on her passing today.

Saddened by the passing of Kirsty Duncan. She was a dedicated public servant who championed science, inclusion, and the well-being of Canadians. Her leadership and integrity made a lasting difference. My thoughts are with her family, colleagues, and all who knew her.
