Daily Bread Food Bank We are Toronto’s food bank. We are on a mission to eliminate food insecurity and advocate for solutions to end poverty.

(1)

As a leader in the fight against hunger, Daily Bread is more than a food bank. In addition to providing food, Daily Bread also provides services such as community information and referrals, job training, crisis counselling, community gardening and community kitchens, research and public policy, the Who's Hungry report as well as training workshops for staff and volunteers at our member agencies.

The kitchen smelled so delicious when we filmed this. 😋

We asked Chef Mike Greenberg, Daily Bread's Food Services Manager, to help us with a recipe that would use up leftover vegetables and turkey from Thanksgiving dinner.

Enter this recipe for Thanksgiving in a bowl, which is budget-friendly and reduces food waste.

Wow! 🤩 At yesterday’s Thanksgiving Public Food Sort, over 200 volunteers sorted enough food donations for more than 60,000 meals 🤯

It’s pretty easy to guess what we’re thankful for this holiday. We’re grateful to every volunteer who rolled up their sleeves to help neighbours in need. 💛

You worked through an incredible 60,208 pounds of food: lifting, sorting, boxing, packing. We love the hubbub and energy that fills our production hall during this event. It gives us hope that as a community, we can accomplish anything.

And we need that hope now. At this time, 1 in 10 Torontonians use a food bank to make ends meet. While we feed that need now, we must also advocate for the policy changes that will enable everyone to realize their own right to food.

For that, we are thankful to all the elected officials who came to the event. Thank you for coming to see the reality of food insecurity firsthand. We hope you left ready to take action on policies that we know will reduce the need for food banks in the future. In attendance:

➡️ Premier Doug Ford (FordNation)
➡️ MPP Michael Parsa, Minister of Children, Community and Social Services
➡️ MPP Lee Fairclough, Etobicoke-Lakeshore
➡️ Mayor Olivia Chow
➡️ Deputy Mayor and Councillor Amber Morley, Ward 3 Etobicoke-Lakeshore
➡️ Councillor Brad Bradford, Beaches-East York
➡️ Councillor Gord Perks, Parkdale-High Park

Thank you so much to every volunteer, official and staff member for spending your Saturday in support of the fight to end hunger.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! 🦃

We're honoured to share that Daily Bread has once again been named one of Canada's Top 100 charities by Charity Intelligence Canada. 🎉

Each year, only 100 Canadian charities receive the charity watchdog's highest five-star rating, which is based on an evaluation of the organization's financial transparency, results reporting, demonstrated impact, need for funding and cents to the cause per dollar donated.

This 2026 recognition reflects the stewardship of our Board of Directors, whose commitment to strong governance, accountability, and transparency ensures that every contribution is directed responsibly toward our mission.

It also reflects the dedication of our staff, volunteers, donors, and partners, who make our work possible every day. 💛

As food bank visits remain at record levels, we remain committed to earning the trust of our community, ensuring emergency food access to anyone who comes to our doors, and advocating for the changes we need to end hunger and poverty in Toronto.

Our Farm to Food Bank program works with 20 Ontario farms to rescue produce like these gorgeous bell peppers that cannot make it to grocery store shelves. 🫑

Last year was the program's most successful year to date.

With the support of donors, we diverted over 5.6 million pounds of produce from the landfill and delivered it to families in need. That's nearly 30% more fruits and veggies than the year prior.

Thank you to all the farmers and supporters who make this program happen. Not only are you avoiding food waste, you're also saving donor dollars that would otherwise be needed to purchase produce. 🍎🥕🥔

Meet Volodymyr. He moved to Canada with his wife and two boys to escape the war in Ukraine and find a fresh start. But rebuilding their lives in Toronto came with a new set of challenges, even after he found employment.

“Almost my entire salary needed to go to rent, even though I found a good job and one of the best-priced apartments on the market,” says Volodymyr. “When you have to choose between paying for rent or food for your kids — that is not a normal situation.”

He's not alone. 88% of Toronto food bank clients live in unaffordable housing, and 1 in 5 (22%) spend all of their income on housing, leaving nothing for food, clothing or other essentials.

"Support from food banks gives us breathing room to feel safety, to feel some stability, and to feel like a start point to grow and to help other people," Volodymyr says.

He is deeply grateful to the donors who make that possible. “The availability of food each day depends on donations. Your support means everything. Thank you for helping families like ours get through the hardest situations of our lives.”

On this National Seniors Day, we're thinking about our older neighbours who are quietly struggling to make ends meet. 💛

Since 2019, the number of seniors relying on Toronto food banks has grown 258%. That's the second largest growth of any age group, behind only adults aged 19-44 (285%).

Food banks are stepping up, but we can't do it alone. Your gift today helps make sure seniors in our community have the food they need.

Five years ago, the Government of Canada declared September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to ensure the heartrending, 150-year-long history of Canada’s residential schools is never forgotten.

Hunger is inextricably linked to the abuses suffered there, both in the past and the present. There was widespread malnutrition in residential schools. And today, over 40% of Indigenous children ages 1-14 living off-reserve are in food-insecure households (Statistics Canada). The legacy of oppression and discrimination lives on, with far-reaching socioeconomic implications.

September 30 is a day of reflection. It’s a time to honour the children sent to residential schools and to recognize the ongoing impact of this historic trauma on our country.

As an organization that values equity and inclusiveness, we are taking time today to learn more about what each one of us can do to be a part of reconciliation. We invite you to do the same.
