Poverty is global. But it’s also right here in Toronto.

On the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we’re reminded of the scale of the challenge: an estimated 826 million people around the world are living in extreme poverty, while more than 2.8 billion people face some form of inadequate housing.

But poverty isn’t only a global issue. Here in Toronto, too many of our neighbours are struggling to afford food, find stable housing, pay the bills or build a future.

At YSM, we believe ending chronic poverty takes more than meeting immediate needs. It means walking alongside people and communities, addressing the barriers that keep people in poverty and creating pathways to help community members move from surviving to thriving.

Because ending poverty starts with all of us and it starts right here at home.

Who will be the next generation of leaders?

YSM's President & CEO Angie Peters is taking part in CEOx1Day North America --a leadership program that connects undergraduate students with CEOs for a day of mentorship and learning.

Now, we’re looking for an undergraduate student who wants to spend a day with Angie, getting a behind-the-scenes look at leadership, decision-making and what it takes to lead an organization.

The CEOx1Day experience will take place in March 2027, but applications are open now.

Know a student who would jump at this opportunity? Applications are open until October 28.

When we share the table, we help nourish our community. ❤️

Huge thanks to Impact Church Toronto for their generous support of YSM this Thanksgiving through their Share the Table initiative. From bags of groceries to a generous cheque supporting our Thanksgiving dinner, thei kindness is making a meaningful difference!

With YSM's Food Bank running low on protein, Impact's donated groceries arrived at just the right time, helping us get essential food and nutrition into the hands of community members who need it.

We’re grateful to partner with a fellow non-profit whose congregation believes in the work we do and in the importance of caring for struggling Toronto neighbours. Thank you for showing up for our community and helping make sure more there is room for all at our table.

Together, we can help more people move from surviving to thriving. 🧡

This Thanksgiving we welcomed close to 300 guests to YSM for a delicious and festive meal, with special dessert treats, great music from a live DJ, and plenty of reasons to smile! And judging by the rave reviews, the food was a true hit and much appreciated by our guests!

A huge thank you to Andre Kutyan, who has generously organized and donated this Thanksgiving meal for FOUR years running, to The Good Son Restaurant for providing the delicious food for a second consecutive year, and for Harvey Kalles Real Estate Ltd., Brokerage for helping to make the meal possible, and all of them for volunteering to greet guests and serve food.

Your generosity helped make this a Thanksgiving to remember for so many in our community. Thank you for showing up, sharing your time and helping make our community feel valued and welcomed.
