Meet Edith Monture, the first Indigenous nurse registered in Canada.

Monture was born on April 10, 1890, on the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario. She graduated from New Rochelle Nursing School in New York in 1914 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War I.

After the war, she returned to the Six Nations Reserve and worked as a nurse and midwife until her retirement.

Like Monture, Indigenous nurses today continue to provide culturally safe care by bridging Western and Indigenous knowledge and practices.

🌈 Happy Pride Month! Every June, we celebrate the diversity, resilience and history of the 2SLGBTQ+ community and reaffirm our support for 2SLGBTQ+ rights and inclusive health care.

Every day across Ontario, nurses support safer, more inclusive care by providing care that is compassionate, nonjudgmental and culturally safe — values that are reflected in CNO’s Code of Conduct.

To everyone celebrating this month, we wish you a happy Pride Month!
