You’ve likely heard a land acknowledgement at the start of an event, meeting, or gathering—but what does it actually mean?
Land acknowledgements are an opportunity to recognize the Indigenous Peoples who have lived on and cared for these lands for generations, while reflecting on our shared history and responsibilities today.
At Women’s Habitat, we believe learning is an important part of building respectful, inclusive communities. This carousel explores the purpose of land acknowledgements and why they continue to matter.
What is one thing you’ve learned about Indigenous history or reconciliation that has stayed with you?

This June, we recognize and celebrate both Pride Month and National Indigenous History Month.
At Women’s Habitat of Etobicoke, we believe that everyone deserves to feel safe, valued, and respected. Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate the strength, diversity, and contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, while National Indigenous History Month invites us to honour the histories, cultures, resilience, and leadership of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.
Together, these observances remind us of the importance of inclusion, understanding, and building communities where everyone belongs.
Join us throughout June as we continue learning, listening, and working toward a future rooted in dignity, respect, and safety for all. 💜

Coercive control is abuse—even when there are no physical signs.
It can look like monitoring someone’s phone, isolating them from loved ones, controlling finances, intimidation, or constant criticism. Over time, these behaviours can deeply impact a person’s sense of safety, autonomy, and mental well-being.
Across Canada, there is growing recognition that coercive control is a serious form of abuse that deserves stronger legal protections, education, and awareness.
Prevention starts with recognizing the warning signs early.
We must shift from silence → accountability, and from control → safety.
If something feels controlling, it matters. Support is available. 💛

AI can feel comforting. It’s available 24/7, responds instantly, and can sound empathetic — but it is not a replacement for real mental health care, community, or human connection.
As AI tools become more integrated into our daily lives, it’s important to understand their limits. Chatbots cannot fully understand trauma, lived experiences, safety risks, or crisis situations the way trained professionals can. Overreliance on AI for emotional support may lead to misinformation, isolation, or harmful advice.
Technology can be a tool, but healing happens through real support systems, trusted professionals, and meaningful human connection. 💚
If you or someone you know is struggling, reaching out to a licensed mental health professional, crisis line, or community organization can make a difference.
