This National Poetry Month, we proudly celebrate the legacy and voice of Toronto-based poet, storyteller, and cultural leader ITAH SADU A Different Booklist . 🇯🇲✊🏾
Born in Jamaica and rooted in community, Itah Sadu has spent decades shaping Canada’s literary landscape through powerful poetry, children’s literature, and advocacy. Her work reflects the rhythms of the African diaspora—centering identity, resistance, joy, and the lived experiences of Black communities.
As a co-founder of the Black Canadian Writers’ Collective and a passionate educator, she has uplifted countless voices while preserving stories that might otherwise go untold.
Itah Sadu’s journey is deeply meaningful. She represents the strength of African women across generations—bridging heritage and future through words. Her storytelling is not only art; it is preservation, empowerment, and a call to remember who we are.
In February 2026, Itah received the key to the city of Toronto from Mayor Olivia Chow in recognition of her lifelong contributions as a cultural leader who has strengthened Toronto’s Black community and enriched the city’s broader literary and cultural landscape.
This month, we honour her contributions and encourage our community to read, share, and celebrate poetry that speaks truth and nurtures culture. You can find a link to her work in the comments. 👇🏾
