Our charity of choice at our meeting last week was Salam Cabbagetown (thank you again to HomeStars for being our venue sponsor and to smitten creative boutique for the door prizes). This is a group of downtown families, friends and neighbours that were inspired to bring a Syrian family to the safety of Canada and welcome them to a community built on trust, respect and diverse traditions.
Salam Cabbagetown formed in January 2016 after a conversation at a neighbourhood gathering motivated them to act in the face of innocent civilians losing their homes and livelihoods. Their goal: to sponsor a family of four or five and assist them in rebuilding their lives in Toronto.
The family of four arrived in Toronto this week, and Salam Cabbagetown were at the airport to welcome them! They found the family an apartment and furnished through furniture donations. The money raised by our group will go towards food, clothing, healthcare, job preparation, and rent. Sadly, the youngest child in the family has cancer so Salam Cabbagetown is also going to help them get to and from their medical appointments.
If you weren't able to attend the meeting and would like to donate, please email [email protected] for more detailed information where you can send your payment. All donations will receive at tax receipt.
Would you like to present a charity at our upcoming meeting? If so, please consider pitching Kennedy House Youth Services as they would love to be considered. Email [email protected] if you would like more information or if you would like to present another charity. There are so many incredible local charities in our city.
