Texas - Lithium-Ion Battery / Thermal Runaway & Explosion

A hoverboard lithium-ion battery underwent thermal runaway and exploded inside an industrial recycling facility. Emergency responders and fire departments responded to a scrap metal that produced smoke near a major highway.

Responding units deployed water streams and heavy machinery to extinguish the fire. Authorities reported no injuries or offsite civilian evacuations, while equipment damage totaled $750,000.

EPA is on the ground providing technical support and continuous air-monitoring assistance to the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department at a chemical release near 1050 Progress Ave. The City of Toledo remains the lead response agency at the scene, and they are posting updates on the situation to their website which residents can visit here: https://bit.ly/4eMb4gi.

Unbelievable. The HAZMAT situation and cars in west Toledo fleeing the 1 mile evacuation zone in north Toledo. This is an unknown chemical leak near Enterprise Blvd and Progress Ave. People are frightened. Some report, the couldn’t even see street lights or cars in front of them.
