French Language Services Commissioner Carl Bouchard is calling for significant improvements after an investigation found serious issues with how service is provided in French at ServiceOntario locations across the province.
During the investigation, Ontarians repeatedly described barriers to accessing services in French. In some instances, people were forced to complete their transactions in English, or by using hand gestures, while others had to verbally translate personal and private information at the counter, were asked to return on a different day when French-speaking staff were available, or endured negative comments from other ServiceOntario clients.
“When we talk about language rights, we are talking about constitutional and quasi-constitutional rights and values,” said Commissioner Bouchard. “These are not suggestions, nor are they mere administrative formalities.”
The government has accepted or committed to review the Commissioner’s 25 recommendations, including reporting back regularly on progress made.
