■Square footage: 10,130 Toronto Fire Department began using motorized vehicles after 1910. P5227).

Before that, the TFD and previous fire companies used horse drawn engines and ladders. Prior to the 1970s, the TFD had open air vehicles (driver cab not covered and mostly aerial trucks), but since then both the TFD and TFS use full covered vehicles. Prior to the 1950s, TFD used tiller-ladder trucks and since have reverted to smaller aerial units that can operate in narrow streets in Toronto. The

Firefighters were called to the scene of a two-alarm fire at the building that once housed Carman’s Dining Club Sunday evening.

The blaze was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported.

The restaurant at 26 Alexander St. was open for 50 years and was once one of the city’s best-known steak houses, hosting the likes of Nat King Cole, Al Green, and Sammy Davis Jr. before closing for good in 2009.

Proprietor Arthur Carman died in 2010 at the age of 84.

According to neighbours the building was under construction.

Heavy plumes of smoke could be seen as far away as Pearson International Airport as Toronto firefighters battled a six-alarm fire at a mattress factory on Thursday.

The fire began at Foamco on Fairbank Avenue, near Dufferin Road and Eglinton Avenue, around 9 a.m. The east wall collapsed around 11:45 a.m. and there are fears the north wall could follow.

Officials say more than 40 trucks and 120 firefighters are at the scene. The Ministry of the Environment has also been called in.

Several homes on nearby Wingold Avenue were evacuated around 1:45 p.m.
