DYK - There have been increasing reports of scammers using fake cash for purchases on marketplace platforms.

Don’t get scammed.

When accepting cash, think about the seller’s behaviour and look for some tell-tale signs of counterfeit money.

Here are some fraud prevention tips that can help you identify counterfeit money:

The most important anti-counterfeit measure is for people to just SLOW DOWN.

• Slow Down the Transaction: Fraudsters often rely on urgency, distractions, or pressure tactics to prevent victims from closely inspecting the cash. Take your time and properly examine the bills before completing the sale.
• Feel the Texture: Real polymer notes are smooth, made from a single piece of plastic, and feature raised ink on the portrait, large numbers, and the word "Canada".
• Look at Details: Check the large transparent window for a detailed metallic portrait and building. Counterfeits often have blurry text or may use stickers that can be peeled off.
• Tilt the Note: The metallic images in the transparent window should change colors when tilted.
• Check Serial Numbers: Many counterfeit bills share the same serial number, whereas genuine bills have unique ones.
• Watch for "Prop" Markers: Some fake bills are explicitly marked with phrases like "Prop Money" or "For Motion Picture Use”.
