48th Highlanders of Canada

On 12 April 1945, Operation CANNONSHOT marked the Canadian crossing of the IJssel River in the Netherlands, helping pave the way for the liberation of Apeldoorn during the final stages of the Second World War. The 48th Highlanders of Canada were among the Canadian units involved in the advance.

Today, that history continues to live on through Operation CANNONSHOT, a volunteer-run group from the Netherlands dedicated to preserving the story of Canada’s role in the liberation of the Dutch people and the enduring bond between our two nations.

From 24–26 April 2026, we were honoured to welcome members of Operation CANNONSHOT to Toronto during the Regiment’s Freedom of the City parade, the St. Julien commemorations, and the Little Canada unveiling.

Le 12 avril 1945, l'opération CANNONSHOT a marqué le passage des troupes canadiennes sur l'IJssel aux Pays-Bas, contribuant ainsi à la libération d'Apeldoorn durant les dernières phases de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Le 48th Highlanders of Canada figurait parmi les unités canadiennes participant à l'avancée.

Aujourd'hui, cette histoire perdure grâce à l'Opération CANNONSHOT, un groupe de bénévoles néerlandais qui se consacre à préserver le récit du rôle du Canada dans la libération du peuple néerlandais et les liens indéfectibles qui unissent nos deux nations.

Du 24 au 26 avril 2026, nous avons eu l'honneur d'accueillir des membres de l'Opération CANNONSHOT à Toronto à l'occasion du défilé de la Droit de la Ville organisé par le Régiment, des commémorations de la Saint-Julien et de l'inauguration du Little Canada.

On 26 April 2026, the 48th Highlanders of Canada unveiled their miniature representation at Little Canada.

From soldiers parading past the Cenotaph at Old City Hall to a tribute along the Highway of Heroes, the display captures small but meaningful moments of remembrance, history, and service.

We extend our thanks to the team at Little Canada for the care and attention given to preserving these stories as part of Canada’s living history.

Le 26 avril 2026, the 48th Highlanders of Canada a dévoilé sa maquette à Little Canada.

Des soldats défilant devant le cénotaphe de l'ancien hôtel de ville à un hommage le long de l'autoroute des héros, l'exposition immortalise des moments de commémoration, d'histoire et de service, aussi brefs qu'émouvants.

Nous remercions chaleureusement l'équipe de Little Canada pour le soin et l'attention qu'elle porte à la préservation de ces récits, véritables témoins de l'histoire vivante du Canada.

On April 26, 2025, the 48th Highlanders of Canada conducted an Act of Remembrance parade at the regimental church, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, located in the heart of downtown Toronto.

This year, the Regiment was joined by two visiting groups from the Netherlands — Operation Cannonshot and the 48th Highlanders of Holland — whose presence added a meaningful international dimension to the commemoration.

The parade was conducted on the Sunday closest to the anniversary of the Battle of St. Julien, fought on April 24, 1915.

Le 26 avril 2025, le 48th Highlanders of Canadaa organisé un défilé commémoratif à l'église régimentaire, l'église presbytérienne St. Andrew, située en plein cœur du centre-ville de Toronto.

Cette année, le régiment était accompagné de deux groupes néerlandais invités : Operation Cannonshot et le 48th Highlanders of Holland. Leur présence a conféré une dimension internationale significative à la commémoration.

Le défilé a eu lieu le dimanche le plus proche de l'anniversaire de la bataille de Saint-Julien, livrée le 24 avril 1915.

Originating in 15th century England, the Freedom of the City was a rare and significant honour granted only to military units a city could fully trust. At a time when cities were fortified with walls and gates, armed troops were not permitted to enter freely. Before being admitted, their intentions were questioned, and only those deemed loyal were granted the privilege to march in with drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed—symbols of both military strength and the city’s confidence in them.

This tradition, once a matter of security and survival, has endured through the centuries and remains a lasting symbol—a signature of trust, loyalty, and respect between a regiment and the community it serves.

Née en Angleterre au XVe siècle, le droit de cite était une distinction rare et prestigieuse, accordée uniquement aux unités militaires en qui une ville pouvait avoir une confiance absolue. À une époque où les villes étaient fortifiées par des remparts et des portes, les troupes armées n'étaient pas autorisées à y pénétrer librement. Avant d'être admises, leurs intentions étaient interrogées, et seuls ceux jugés loyaux recevaient le privilège de défiler au son des tambours, drapeaux déployés et baïonnettes au canon – symboles de la puissance militaire et de la confiance que la ville leur accordait.

Cette tradition, jadis une question de sécurité et de survie, a perduré à travers les siècles et demeure un symbole fort, une marque de confiance, de loyauté et de respect entre un régiment et la communauté qu'il sert.

During the 48th Highlander's Freedom of The City ceremony at Nathan Philips Square on 25 April 2026, the official unit mascot was unveiled by forming up alongside the Regiment as they were inspected by Her Worship Olivia Chow, Mayor of Toronto.

Mackenzie, a female peregrine falcon, is named after Lieutenant Colonel D. A. (Don) Mackenzie, DSO (DSC-US). LCol Mackenzie was the Commanding Officer of the 48th during the 2nd World War between 1944-1945. Unfortunately on 12 April 1945,  LCol Mackenzie was struck by incoming ordnance and killed in action. 

It is in his service and sacrifice that the Regiment dedicates a living symbol to be named in his honour.

In large part we sincerely thank the Canadian Raptor Conservancy for providing care, training, and housing for Mackenzie. When not on parade with the 48th, she will be participating in education programs to help inform the public of the various raptors of North America.

Lors de la cérémonie de remise des clés de la ville au 48th Highlanders of Canada, qui s'est tenue à Nathan Philips Square le 25 avril 2026, la mascotte officielle de l'unité a été dévoilée. Le régiment s'est rassemblé aux côtés de ses hommes, sous l'inspection de Son Excellence Olivia Chow, mairesse de Toronto. 

Mackenzie, une femelle faucon pèlerin, porte le nom du lieutenant-colonel D. A. (Don) Mackenzie, DSO (DSC-US). Le lieutenant-colonel Mackenzie commandait le 48e Régiment pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, de 1944 à 1945. Malheureusement, le 12 avril 1945, il fut tué au combat par un obus.
C'est en hommage à son service et à son sacrifice que le Régiment lui dédie un symbole vivant qui portera son nom. 

Nous remercions tout particulièrement la Société canadienne de conservation des rapaces pour les soins, la formation et l'hébergement qu'elle a prodigués à Mackenzie. Lorsqu'elle ne défile pas avec le 48th Highlanders, elle participe à des programmes éducatifs visant à mieux faire connaître les différents rapaces d'Amérique du Nord

135 years of proud service.

A city-wide honour reaffirmed.

On Saturday 25 April 2026 at 1100 hrs, the 48th Highlanders of Canada will march to City Hall in commemoration of the Freedom of the City. This honour was first bestowed in 1966, reaffirmed in 2001, and again this year in celebration of the Regiment's 135th Anniversary.

Freedom of the City entitles the unit, for all time, to march through the city with “drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed”.

Former serving Highlanders, service members, Friends & Family of the Regiment, and fellow Torontians are welcome to join us at Nathan Phillips Square to celebrate.

Un honneur renouvelé pour toute la ville.

Le samedi 25 avril 2026 à 11 h, le 48th Highlanders of Canada défilera jusqu'à l'hôtel de ville pour commémorer la Citoyenneté d'honneur de la ville. Cet honneur lui a été conféré pour la première fois en 1966, renouvelé en 2001, et de nouveau cette année pour célébrer le 135e anniversaire du Régiment.

La Citoyenneté d'honneur de la ville autorise l'unité, pour toujours, à défiler dans la ville « au son des tambours, drapeaux déployés et baïonnettes au canon ».

Les anciens membres du Régiment, les militaires en service, les familles et amis du Régiment, ainsi que tous les Torontois sont invités à se joindre à nous à la place Nathan Phillips pour célébrer cet événement.

N'hésitez pas à partager et à identifier les personnes qui, selon vous, devraient être présentes.

On March 14, 2026, the regiment hosted an Open House at Moss Park Armoury, welcoming members of the public to learn more about 48th Highlanders of Canada.

Visitors had the opportunity to speak with soldiers, explore the equipment used in training and operations, and take part in hands-on urban operations activities alongside our troops.

Le 14 mars 2026, le régiment a organisé une journée portes ouvertes à la caserne de Moss Park, invitant le public à en apprendre davantage sur le 48th Highlanders of Canada.

Les visiteurs ont pu discuter avec les soldats, découvrir l'équipement utilisé à l'entraînement et en opérations, et participer à des exercices pratiques d'opérations urbaines aux côtés de nos troupes.

On March 20–22, 2026, the 48th Highlanders of Canada conducted Exercise URBAN FALCON at CFB Petawawa alongside elements of 32 Canadian Brigade Group units .32cer . This training emphasized urban operations, developing section and platoon-level tactics, communication procedures, and coordinated movement in complex, close-quarters environments.

Du 20 au 22 mars 2026, le 48e Régiment des Highlanders du Canada a mené l’exercice URBAN FALCON à la BFC Petawawa, en collaboration avec des unités du 32e Groupe-brigade du Canada. Cet entraînement portait sur les opérations en milieu urbain, le développement des tactiques de section et de peloton, les procédures de communication et les mouvements coordonnés dans des environnements complexes et rapprochés.

After several months of hard work, on 28 March 2026 at Fort York Armoury candidates of the multitude courses run throughout the training year celebrated the first milestone in their career: completing Basic Military Qualification (BMQ). Two Members of the 48th Highlanders achieved the Top Candidate (TC) award in their respective courses.

Bravo Zulu to Pte Richardson & 2LT Bald for setting the example for their peers, and to our newly basic qualified members! The next bound awaits, Dileas Gu Brath!

Après plusieurs mois d'entraînement intensif, le 28 mars 2026, à l'armurerie de Fort York, les candidats des nombreux stages dispensés tout au long de l'année ont célébré une étape importante de leur carrière : l'obtention de la qualification militaire de base (QMB). Deux membres du 48th Highlanders ont reçu la distinction de meilleur candidat (TC) dans leurs stages respectifs.
