Chop Suey Nation! 🥢✨
A heartfelt thank you to Ann Hui, Jeanette Liu, and Joanna Liu for speaking at our TPL Asian Heritage Month event. We greatly appreciated the opportunity to learn more about Hakka culture and hear your meaningful stories.
Listening to your experiences as second-generation immigrants growing up in Toronto was incredibly comforting and deeply touching. 💛
At TPL, we are committed to creating welcoming and safe spaces for everyone, especially newcomers, and conversations like these remind us of the importance of community, identity, and storytelling.
We were also honoured to hear from Ann Hui, writer, journalist, and author of Chop Suey Nation. The book was named one of the best books of 2019 by The Globe and Mail, The Walrus, and CBC, and won the 2020 Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction from Wilfrid Laurier University. 📚🏆🥇
Must Read - Chop Suey Nation Ann Hui. The book dives into Ann’s journey going across Canada, from Victoria to Fogo Island, to write about small-town Chinese restaurants and the families who run them. 📚✏️
You can find this at your local library, book store or read online on Libby (sign up with your Toronto Public Library Card)

In the face of exile and erasure, this artistically crafted documentary features testimonies from five Afghan women whose courage and conviction transcend borders. Through a series of deeply personal conversations filmed in intimate spaces, director Brishkay Ahmed weaves together stories of resistance, exile, and self-discovery. From celebrated singer Mozhdah Jamalzadah to director and activist Nelofer Pazira-Fisk, each woman reflects on what it means to speak—and survive—as an Afghan woman in a world that continuously attempts to silence them.
