This is the day many thought would never come.
Mexico City has ended traditional bullfighting that harms or kills bulls.
After centuries of Sunday crowds and dusty arenas, the capital chose a different path. It chose life over spectacle.
The vote was overwhelming. Lawmakers backed a measure that bans killing bulls and using sharp tools in the ring. Fans called it a loss for culture. Others called it overdue compassion.
For animal advocates, this is a promise kept. No more blood on the sand. No more cheers for a final thrust.
For families who grew up with the fiesta brava, it is the close of a chapter. Traditions shape us, but they can also change. Cities do too.
Mexico City’s bullring is still there. The memories are still there. But the pain is not. That matters.
Some will miss the art, the music, the color. Many will breathe easier knowing the animals go home alive.
Five hundred years is a long time. Today, the city turned the page.
