Two Hills RCMP issue water safety reminders as summer heats up
Two Hills, Alta. - As the summer heats up, the [Detachment] RCMP are reminding everyone heading to local lakes and rivers, to keep safety top of mind. The warm weather draws many to the water, and with that comes the need for extra awareness and care.
Two Hills RCMP urge people who intend to hop into either a boat, kayak, canoe or even simply enjoy going for a refreshing dip in the water to keep the following safety tips in mind:
• Stay sober – Boating or swimming impaired puts you and other waterway users at risk. Just like driving a car, it is illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
• Know before you go – Always check weather and water conditions. To avoid being caught in dangerous weather, make sure to monitor the latest forecast in your area. If a thunderstorm comes without warning, head for the shore.
• Plan ahead – If you are heading out on the water, plan your trip and let someone know where you are travelling and when you are expected to return. Do not take to open water without an understanding of where you are or where you are going.
• Preparation is key – Boaters should make sure their watercraft is equipped with mandatory boat safety equipment including enough life jackets for everyone on board, signalling devices, and bailing containers. Always bring emergency supplies like extra food, water, clothing, and a cell phone.
• Know your limits – Be aware of your swimming limits and abilities. Fatigue and exhaustion while swimming can cause drowning.
• Wear a personal flotation device (PFD) – Wearing a lifejacket or PFD can save your life and it is the best insurance you can have on or near the water. Remember, lifejackets only work when they are worn.
Impaired operation of a boat is the same as a vehicle. Don’t!

Two Hills RCMP reminds seniors to stay safe online during Seniors Week
Two Hills, Alta. - In recognition of Seniors Week, the Two Hills RCMP is encouraging older adults, and those who care for them, to take time to learn about how to stay safe online and avoid becoming victims of fraud.
With more and more seniors using the internet for day-to-day living, including online shopping, banking, social media, and even dating, it’s more important than ever to understand the risks and take steps to protect yourself. Fraudsters often target seniors by exploiting their trust, unfamiliarity with technology, or desire for companionship, but with a few simple precautions, many scams can be avoided.
To help protect yourself, or a senior you care about, the Two Hills RCMP offers the following fraud prevention tips:
• Create passwords with at least eight characters, including uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Never reuse passwords across different accounts.
• Keep your computer, smartphone, and tablet secure with updated antivirus software and automatic system updates.
• Don’t be afraid to say no. If someone pressures you to send money or provide personal information right away, end the conversation. You’re not being rude — you’re being safe.
• High-pressure sales tactics, requests for secrecy, urgent demands, or upfront fees are all signs of potential fraud.
• If you’re unsure about a message, email, or phone call, talk to a family member or someone you trust. You can also visit the company’s official website and call their verified contact number to confirm any claims.
• Be suspicious of calls or messages claiming you’ve won a prize, especially if you’re asked to pay a fee to receive it.
• Legitimate businesses and government agencies will never ask for payment using gift cards. This is a common tactic used by scammers.
• Use a family safe word. If someone calls claiming to be a relative in distress, ask for the safe word. If they can’t provide it, hang up immediately and call the person they claimed to be directly.
• Never give out personal information. This includes your SIN, banking details, or passwords — especially if you didn’t initiate the contact.
• Be cautious with online relationships. Romance scams often target seniors looking for connection. Be skeptical of anyone who quickly professes love or asks for money.
• Report suspicious activity, even if you didn’t lose money. Reporting scams helps protect others. Contact your local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
We all need to do our part to protect our Seniors! Sgt Henry

Two Hills RCMP recently had a report of someone cloning the detachment admin line. The caller then posed as an RCMP officer from our detachment. A false name was provided and the caller told the individual his bank account had been compromised. Fortunately, the individual came by our office to verify the information and learned he was being scammed.
