From the ER to the small screen 📺, Nova Scotia innovation is in the spotlight.

This week, Nova Scotia–based med tech company Ring Rescue Inc. will see its groundbreaking device featured on an upcoming episode of the hit HBO Max series The Pitt.

Developed through collaboration between engineers at Dalhousie University and a frontline emergency physician at the Dartmouth General Hospital, Ring Rescue tackles a surprisingly common emergency room challenge: safely removing rings from swollen or injured fingers.

What started as a local innovation is now making a global impact. Today, the device is used in more than 2,000 hospitals, EMS agencies, and fire-rescue teams across North America, helping clinicians deliver safer, faster care for patients.

A family challenge sparked an innovation with global potential.

When Tracey McGillivray’s father began experiencing frequent falls, there was no practical way to help him get back up safely at home. That problem became the foundation for Axtion and the development of the RAYMEX® Lift - a portable device to help people maintain independence and age safely in place.

Built through collaboration across Nova Scotia’s innovation ecosystem - from university research partners to local manufacturing - Axtion is now preparing to bring its technology to global markets.

This profile explores how the company went from early workshop prototypes to international attention, and how Nova Scotia continues to support bold innovation with global impact.
