This is the only reasonable way to manage public trails in protected natural areas. There is no place called "away" to which anything can be thrown. Everywhere is somewhere.

If you've ever visited one of our trails and wondered where the garbage cans are, you're not alone!

Island Trails follows the "Pack It In, Pack It Out" principle, part of the internationally recognized Leave No Trace program. This simple idea helps protect the natural beauty of our trails while reducing impacts on wildlife and the environment.

Why no garbage cans?

🗑️ Garbage cans require regular collection and maintenance by volunteers -significantly impacting volunteer time for trail maintenance.

🐾 Overflowing bins can attract wildlife and create litter problems.

🌲 Leaving trails as natural as possible helps preserve the outdoor experience for everyone.

When you visit an Island Trails location, please take everything you bring with you when you leave—including snack wrappers, water bottles, tissues, and dog waste bags.

Every small action makes a difference. Together, we can keep PEI's trails clean, safe, and beautiful for future generations.

🌿 Leave only footprints.
📸 Take only pictures.
🗑️ Pack out what you pack in.

Thank you for doing your part to help protect the trails we all love.

Transfer of responsibility for managing the Lakeview Trail at Long Lake Provincial Park

For ten years, the Long Lake Provincial Park Association (LLPPA) has been responsible for managing the Lakeview Trail and its associated parking lots at Long Lake Provincial Park. This management responsibility has now been transferred from LLPPA to Spryfield Business Commission. A formal agreement between SBC and the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NS-DNR) was signed in April 2026.

Looking to the future, LLPPA will focus on conservation, education and outreach in the next few years. This will include a broader focus on the 2000-hectare park as a whole. These are objectives that LLPPA set for itself when it was founded in 1987.

For details of this transfer of responsibility, see:
