With fall migration underway, you might be seeing more wild birds in your area. While the risk of avian influenza infections to humans is low, it can increase through activities like birdwatching, hunting, or keeping backyard poultry, or if your work brings you in close contact with animals and their environment.

Take precautions:
• Avoid direct contact with wild birds or other animals, especially if they are dead or seem sick
• Wash your hands thoroughly after touching animals or animal products
• Keep pets or your small flocks away from potentially infected birds and other animals

Fetal dopplers let you listen to your baby’s heartbeat. But using a fetal doppler yourself at home can give you false reassurance about your baby’s health and lead to delays in seeking medical attention.

Fetal dopplers are meant to be used by people with specialized clinical training because its sounds can be easily misinterpreted (e.g., the mother's heartbeat or the blood flow through the placenta can easily be mistaken for the baby's heartbeat).

If you are concerned about your baby’s wellbeing, seek immediate medical attention.

Pet food, especially raw pet food, can be contaminated with harmful germs like Salmonella.

These germs can spread to anyone who has contact with a pet, their food, or their environment.

It is always important to store and handle pet food safely:
- Wash your hands after feeding your pet
- Use dedicated dishes and utensils for pet food
- Wash pet dishes separately from your own

Because children aged 5 and under, older adults, pregnant people, or people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for serious illness, they should not handle raw pet food.

Canada's measles outbreak is declared over following more than two months without a new outbreak-associated case.

The outbreak began in October 2024 and resulted in more than 6,400 cases. Most who became ill had not been vaccinated against measles.

Since measles continues to spread in many parts of the world, travel-related cases will continue to be seen in Canada.

Two doses of a measles-containing vaccine provide strong protection against infection. To learn more visit https://ow.ly/rPSI50ZZ3GH

Lead exposure can be harmful, especially for young children. Take simple steps to help protect your family from lead exposure.

Here are a few ways to reduce exposure:

• Keep dust levels down, as it may contain lead by regularly dusting, vacuuming and wet-mopping.
• Avoid using lead crystalware, especially for infants, children, and pregnant people. Lead can transfer into food and drinks.
• Keep adult jewellery away from young children, as some jewellery may contain lead.

🎃👻 Getting ready for Halloween?

When decorating:
• Check that your spooky lights don’t have damaged wires and loose connections, and that they have a certification mark, like CSA, cUL or cETL.
• Use battery-powered candles in jack-o’-lanterns instead of an open flame. Never leave lit candles unattended.

When choosing a costume:
• Make sure it fits well. Oversized costumes and dangling accessories can cause trips and falls.
• Remember that “flame-resistant” does not mean fire-proof. Be careful around open flames.
• If a costume lights up, make sure the battery compartment is child-resistant. Button batteries are very dangerous if swallowed.
• For your child’s face paint and makeup, choose products intended for children, and do a patch test first to check for sensitivities.

A spooky look should never be a safety risk. A little planning can make Halloween fun and safe! 🧙‍ 🧟 🧛🏿 👸🏽

Before you close your cottage, cabin, trailer, shed or other buildings, it's important to give them a good clean. Watch out for signs of rodents, as their nests, droppings and urine may carry hantaviruses that can cause serious illness.

When cleaning contaminated areas:
• Wear a mask and gloves
• Don’t sweep or vacuum droppings as this could release virus particles into the air
• Wet the area with disinfectant or bleach before cleaning
• Wipe wet droppings with paper towels or a wet mop
• Double-bag any nests and droppings that you’re disposing
