Behind every number is a life lost and loved ones left grieving.

Fatal collisions on Manitoba roads are up 28% compared to this time last year.

We can’t afford to wait for this trend to change. Every driver must take action:

• Stay focused - Keep your eyes on the road, not on your phone.
• Leave space - Give yourself room and time to react.
• Drive sober - Plan a safe ride home if you plan on consuming alcohol or cannabis while out.
• Slow down – speeding contributed to 11 of these fatal collisions

Together, we can stop this tragic rise in fatal collisions.

Make safe choices. Protect lives. Every trip. Every time.

On Oct. 28, at approximately 9:50 a.m., RCMP on patrol in Carman observed a male wearing a mask or balaclava riding a bicycle in an alley near Highway 3.

RCMP attempted to perform a traffic stop on the individual, who ignored the officer and continued to ride for two blocks. He then got off the bike and went down an embankment on foot into the Boyne River basin.

The officer pursued the male on foot and arrested him in the river. The suspect was identified as having a warrant of arrest for prior charges, including four counts of failing to comply with undertaking conditions.

RCMP took the male back to the detachment and searched the backpack he was wearing, finding more than 20 grams of suspected methamphetamine and various drug paraphernalia.

Steven Woodend, 46, of the RM of Dufferin is charged with:
• Drug possession for the purpose of trafficking;
• Drug possession;
• Disguised with intent to commit offence; and
• Resisting/obstructing a peace officer.

He was remanded into custody.

A significant increase in the number of Manitoba motor vehicle fatalities this year has prompted a reminder from RCMP for motorists to drive responsibly.

The reminder follows collisions in the past week in Dominion City and The Pas that resulted in the deaths of two 19-year-old males. For the month of October alone, the Manitoba RCMP has responded to eight collisions that have killed eight people.

For the year, the Manitoba RCMP has responded to 65 fatal collisions that have claimed the lives of 73 people. This is an increase of 28 per cent from this time last year – when 57 deaths had been recorded. It is also 28 per cent above the five-year average.

Twenty-five of the 73 people who have died in collisions this year were under the age of 30.

“The high number of fatal collisions that have occurred this year is deeply concerning,” said Staff Sgt. Jon Greer, RCMP Traffic Services Enforcement Commander. “These traumatic events leave a lasting impact on the families and friends of the lost. They also deeply affect the first responders, volunteer firefighters, paramedics and police who respond to these tragedies.”

Various factors have contributed to each collision and include:
• Alcohol and/or drug impairment. Year to date, impairment is confirmed or suspected in 17 fatal collisions, with RCMP awaiting confirmation via toxicology tests in 11 of those cases.
• Speed. Vehicles travelling above the speed limit have been cited as a contributing factor in 11 fatal collisions.
• Seatbelt use. The number of fatal collisions this year where at least one person wasn’t wearing a seatbelt or helmet (in collisions involving off-road vehicles) is 23.
• Distraction. Precise data is difficult to confirm, but the use of handheld devices and other forms of distraction continues to be a concern.

In total, 14 collisions that have resulted in the deaths of 18 people this year occurred at intersections. Ten fatal collisions this year have involved off-road vehicles, such as ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes and snowmobiles.

In response to the increase in road fatalities, Manitoba RCMP are placing an increased emphasis on traffic enforcement throughout the province over the coming weeks and months.

Drivers are urged to stay sober, be on the lookout for motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians, be mindful of wildlife, not exceed posted speed limits and not look at their cellphones.

“Motorists need to stay alert and follow the rules of the road at all times,” said Greer. “Making smart decisions when behind the wheel will allow themselves, as well as others on the road, to get home safely.”

Island Lake RCMP investigating homicide

On October 24, 2026, at 2:05 a.m., Island Lake RCMP were notified by Manitoba First Nations Safety Officers (FNSO) about a possible shooting in the community of St. Theresa Point.

RCMP were advised by FNSO’s that they had located a deceased male outside a residence.

Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services, Island Lake RCMP, along with Thompson RCMP Forensic Investigative Services all deployed to the community.

The initial investigation determined the death of a 23-year-old male was the result of a homicide. The male had attempted to enter a residence when he was shot and died at the scene.

Riley Wood, 19, from St. Theresa Point, was arrested and charged with manslaughter. Wood remains in custody.

It is believed that the suspect and the victim were known to each other.

Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services along with Island Lake RCMP continue to investigate.

On October 28, 1970, Sgt James O’Malley drowned in the Kettle River, near Gillam, while searching for a drowning victim.

Sgt. James Aldridge O’Malley was born in Harris, SK and was married to Marjorie with 3 kids. During his RCMP career, James lived in 17 different Canadian communities including postings in the Yukon and NWT. His only son joined the RCMP.

While posted in the Arctic, Sgt. O’Malley often traveled by dog team (he was once overdue by 12 days due to a severe Arctic blizzard) and had even trekked 65 miles in one day across broken sea ice.

Despite extensive searches using dragging equipment & a helicopter, Sgt O’Malley’s body was not found until 1975. His remains were interred at the RCMP cemetery in Regina after a regimental funeral was held at the RCMP Chapel.

We will never forget the sacrifice he made.

On October 26, 2026, at 4:51 p.m., The Pas RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of provincial road 282 and Young’s Point in the RM of Kelsey.

The driver of the SUV, a 19-year-old male from Alberta, was declared deceased at the scene by EMS.

The driver of the truck, a 66-year-old female from The Pas, was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
