The Coalition Against Trans Antagonism

We are organizing together with the message that until social justice struggles in Vancouver center and prioritize the wellbeing and self-determination of trans women and s*x workers, liberatory struggles will continue to reproduce the very systemic and structural violence that they seek to end.

Vancouver has a long standing history of trans exclusionary and s*x worker exclusionary radical feminism (TERF & SWERF) dating back to the 1970s, which includes, and is not limited to, Vancouver R**e Relief Crisis Centre, Feminist Current, and the Vancouver Women’s Library. Under the smokescreen of a radical feminism, these violent, bigoted groups and individuals have sought to exclude trans women from their crisis centres and organizing circles, and have played both sides of colonial Canada’s criminal legal system in their attempts to further criminalize s*x work and disrupt inclusionary social justice legal movements, and protection from violence for trans people (especially trans women). In regards to s*x work, they champion narratives which seek to conflate by-choice s*x work and human trafficking, as well as rescue workers and remove their agency to survive.

Our Basis of Unity:

We assert that s*x work is work and commit to the fight for safer workplace conditions and ending the stigma and criminalization of labour which people of many genders consensually choose to partake in, the majority of whom are women.

We oppose human trafficking and s*x slavery and seek to center and support victims of these oppressive practices and realities.

We assert that trans women are women and understand that trans women of colour, particularly Black and Indigenous trans women, are disproportionately affected by violence on interpersonal, positional and institutional levels.

We understand the gender binary is a colonial construct and affirm the diversity of gender identity and gender expression of people around the world, especially those who are reclaiming identities and roles lost, erased and vilified due to colonization.
