We will buy from locally owned bookstores and distribute these books among the Little Free Libraries in our East Vancouver neighbourhood and beyond.

We can’t wait for MOLLY’S TUXEDO by Vicki Johnson, illustrated by Gillian Reid! This picture book about a gender-nonconforming kid who wants to wear a tuxedo for school picture day comes out 6/27/23 from little bee books & GLAAD. http://ow.ly/ZfhI50OH22t

Vicki gave us the inside scoop:

✨ WHAT VICKI HOPES READERS TAKE AWAY

“I hope young readers come away knowing it’s okay to listen to their inner compass, to be brave, and to be themselves, even if it means they make different choices than others. I want them to know they are perfect just the way they are. I hope adult caregivers consider that children have rich interior lives, and that they are constantly demonstrating who they are if we listen carefully and allow them the room to show us.”

✨ WHAT VICKI INCLUDED IN THE BOOK FOR HERSELF

"Molly goes down the list of the many things wrong with dresses and I definitely indulged myself in that section! But there’s a line about needing pockets “to keep treats in case you find a stray” that I put in to reflect my love of animals and to demonstrate that important part of Molly’s character (and all of my characters, to be honest)."

✨ WHAT VICKI RECOMMENDS READING NEXT

"I think readers who enjoy Molly will also love Robert Tregoning’s tender picture book Out of the Blue, illustrated by Stef Murphy (Bloomsbury, 2023). Older readers will love author/illustrator Rachel Elliott’s middle grade graphic novel (and Stonewall Honor book) The Real Riley Mayes (Balzer + Bray, 2022)."

The New York Times Book Review celebrated its 125th anniversary this weekend by reprinting some of its favorite reviews over the years, including White Teeth.

"Zadie Smith's debut novel is, like the London it portrays, a restless hybrid of voices, tones and textures. Hopscotching through several continents and 150 years of history, 'White Teeth' encompasses a teeming family saga, a sly inquiry into race and identity and a tenderhearted satire on religious antagonism and cultural bemusement...Smith holds it all together with a raucous energy and confidence."
