The quality of support we provide to children is closely tied to how supported we feel. As a team, we focus on creating an environment where people can think out loud, ask questions, and get support when they need it. When staff feel supported in their role, it allows for more responsive, respectful support for the children and families we work alongside.

Burnout tends to build quietly, especially in roles that are centred around caring for others. At FCPG, pay attention to how work feels day to day. We always work as a team, which means mentors and colleagues are available for support when its needed most. There’s a shared understanding that consistency matters, but so does being human.

Wrapping up our series on the functions of behaviour, we are talking automatic behaviours. Some behaviors help regulate emotions or sensory experiences like rocking, tapping, or humming. People might engage in these behaviours to feel calm or focused. When we recognize these functions, we can honor sensory needs and offer strategies that keep the person engaged and comfortable.

We have just two more posts in our functions of behaviour series. We know that behavior can also signal that a situation feels overwhelming or uncomfortable. A child may avoid tasks, noises, or social situations. When addressing unsafe behaviours or supporting our learners to develop new tolerance and resiliency skills, we always take a proactive approach. Understanding the function allows us to support them in learning safer, more adaptive ways to manage challenges and regulate their environment.

Play is a powerful and meaningful tool in early intervention sessions! Through play, children are able to learn in ways that feel natural, motivating, and enjoyable, which creates a strong foundation for skill development and connection. When learning is paired with play, children are more motivated to participate, explore, and try new things. This increases attention, reduces frustration, and helps skills stick over time. Another benefit of play based learning is that it creates opportunities for turn-taking, sharing, joint attention, and expressive language. We are going to coninue our discussion this week on the functions of behaviour. Sometimes behavior is about getting something a person wants. It could be a toy, a snack, or a preferred activity. Children may learn ways to get these things that aren’t safe or socially acceptable. Recognizing the function helps us teach safer, more effective ways for them to ask for or access what they want, supporting independence and confidence.

Let's talk attention! Some behaviors are a way to reach out, connect, or be noticed. A child may ask for help, share a feeling, or simply want to be part of what’s happening. Sometimes, children learn ways to meet this need that aren’t safe or effective. When we understand the function, we can support them in learning more positive and meaningful ways to connect, building stronger relationships and trust.
