In the Koksilah watershed on southern Vancouver Island, farms, rural homes, fish habitat, aquifers, and managed forest all depend on the same water. In a world of climate change, managing timber and water is one connected challenge. The work is not new in principle, but it is more visible, more urgent, and more accountable than ever, and the Koksilah watershed is one place where that work is being tested on the ground, David Beleznay, P.Eng, RPF, and Francis Guyver FIT, write in the fall 2026 edition of BC Forest Professional.

Managing wildfire risk, preparing for wildfire response, and supporting prescribed and cultural fire in BC requires an integrated approach that considers fire early in the planning process, Kira Hoffman, PhD AFP, Isabel Bodnar, FIT, and Fons Raedschelders write in the fall 2026 edition of BC Forest Professional.

Designing harvest areas with controlled fire in mind allows forest and fire practitioners to create safer, more effective, and operationally feasible burn units. By incorporating fuel continuity, access, and control features into layout and harvest planning, harvested blocks can better support prescribed and cultural burning while contributing to broader landscape resilience when wildfires inevitably occur.

A Bramley apple tree at Elliott Street Square in Victoria was the first tree planted in recognition of Canada’s first National Tree Day in 2011. National Tree Day takes place during each year and encourages Canadians to take action for more climate-resilient communities, whether by planting new trees or caring for existing ones. This year, National Tree Day took place on Wednesday, September 23, but celebrations and events continue throughout the week. Read 'Final Cut: Reconciliation in forestry,' an editorial written by Chief Otis Guichon of Tŝideldel First Nation.

Wise words from Chief Otis Guichon of Tŝideldel First Nation.

In his recent opinion editorial for Canadian Forest Industries, Chief Guichon shares an important perspective on reconciliation in forestry, grounded in leadership, partnership, stewardship, and creating meaningful opportunities for First Nations.

As we approach National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we thank Chief Guichon for sharing his perspective and for reminding us that reconciliation is built through action, relationships, and a shared commitment to doing things differently.

We are proud to share his words and encourage others across the forest sector to take the time to read and reflect. Read the full article: https://www.woodbusiness.ca/final-cut-reconciliation-in-forestry/

is a great time to get outside and learn more about one of Canada’s most valuable resources by visiting a forest near you.

Want to identify the trees you see along the way? The NFW-BC Coalition offers free, colour tree posters featuring some of the most common conifer species in British Columbia.

Learn how to tell trees apart by their needles, cones, and bark, discover where different species commonly grow, and see if you can spot the difference between a Sitka spruce and a lodgepole pine. Each poster includes photos and helpful information about the species.

Download the posters from the BC Coalition website: https://www.bcnfw.ca/tree-posters/
