As we approach the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, CLBC reflects on the ongoing work of building respectful relationships with Indigenous communities across B.C.

The new report, Walking Together: The Path Toward Reconciliation, highlights progress made alongside the Indigenous Advisory Committee (IAC), Indigenous governments, communities, families and self-advocates to advance reconciliation and strengthen supports for Indigenous people with developmental disabilities.

Guided by the voices and wisdom of the IAC, the report highlights work from 2022 to 2025, including strengthened partnerships, Indigenous-led service delivery, culturally grounded housing and youth transition supports.

The report serves not only as an update, but also as an invitation to continue walking together. CLBC and the IAC seek to create a future that fully honours the right of Indigenous people with disabilities to self-determination while ensuring they are fully included, supported, and connected within their communities.

On September 3, we were proud to celebrate the Lheidli Tโ€™enneh โ€˜Atsiyan โ€˜Inkโ€™e โ€˜Atsoo Elders Society as a 2026 CLBC WOW (Widening Our World) Award recipient. The Society was recognized for its leadership in supporting Indigenous women with developmental disabilities through culturally safe and meaningful connections to community, culture and belonging.

Through teachings, language and traditions, members of the Elders Society help participants reconnect with their identity, build confidence and strengthen connections to culture and community.

The Society works in partnership with AiMHi - Prince George Association for Community Living and CLBC to support people eligible for CLBC-funded services and help service providers create more inclusive and culturally responsive supports.

The Elders Societyโ€™s work is helping create opportunities for Indigenous women with developmental disabilities to connect, learn, contribute and feel a strong sense of belonging.

September is Disability Employment Month in B.C., highlighting the significant role people with disabilities play in the workforce and the importance of reducing barriers to inclusive employment.

This month, weโ€™re sharing stories that highlight the different ways people with disabilities are contributing to their communities and building meaningful careers.

In a new story from Selfadvocatenet.com, Ross Evans shares his experience starting his own business, Evanโ€™s Barn Keeping. With support from a job coach, Ross built his own customer base and found work he enjoys.

โ€œI own my own business. I am really proud of that," he says.

On Sept. 8, we were proud to celebrate Lynne-Mari De Frane as a 2026 CLBC WOW (Widening Our World) Award recipient. Lynne-Mari received the award for her work with CLBCโ€™s South Island Community Council (SICC) to develop, distribute and expand communication boards across B.C. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ†

The project, called โ€œCommunication for Everyone,โ€ is helping make communication more accessible for people who are non-speaking or who use picture symbols and other forms of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

Working with colleagues Deb Woodland and Angela Leeson, the SICC and School District 62, Lynne-Mari helped adapt communication boards originally developed for schools so they could be used in community spaces. The boards have now been distributed to close to 30 CLBC offices across B.C. and are being used by 22 other organizations to support accessible communication.

Lynne-Mariโ€™s work is helping create more accessible spaces where people have different ways to communicate their needs, choices and ideas.

Community Living BC is deeply saddened by the loss of Gerry Juzenas.

Gerry was a kind, generous, and passionate advocate who shared his lived experience, wisdom, and leadership to help CLBC and others learn, grow, and move forward in our vision of inclusion and full citizenship. He was a familiar presence in communities across B.C., using his voice to champion the rights, dignity, and belonging of people with intellectual disabilities.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Gerry's family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched. While he will be greatly missed, his legacy lives on in the communities he helped shape and in the ongoing work toward inclusion and full citizenship that he championed so passionately.

Thank you, Gerry. Your voice, leadership, and friendship will not be forgotten. ๐Ÿ’™
