Alexis Park Elementary School Mural Unveiled: Thank you Sheldon Louis!

A school is more than a building. It's a place where students should be able to see themselves, their stories, and their cultures reflected in the spaces around them.

This week, the Alexis Park Elementary community celebrated the unveiling of a stunning new mural created by OKIB syilx artist Sheldon Louis, alongside student artists. The Four Food Chiefs are featured prominently and the mural weaves together syilx teachings, student identity, and belonging.

The project is a powerful example of learning and culture coming together in a way that will leave a lasting impact on students for years to come.

A heartfelt thank you to Sheldon Louis, the Indigenous Education Department, Alexis Park Elementary staff, and all of the students who contributed their creativity, ideas, and talents to make this vision a reality.

šŸŒ… Safety Reminder for Families

As the days become shorter, many students will be travelling to and from school in low-light conditions. We encourage all students, families, and motorists to take extra care during the morning commute.

Students are reminded to:
āœ… Wear bright or reflective clothing when walking or cycling
āœ… Use designated crosswalks and pathways whenever possible
āœ… Stay alert and avoid distractions such as phones or earbuds near roadways
āœ… Allow extra travel time on darker mornings

Drivers are reminded to:
āœ… reduce speed in school zones and watch carefully for pedestrians and cyclists

A shared commitment to safety helps ensure every student arrives at school and returns home safely!

Transit for Teens: Student Ideas in Action!

Over the past few weeks, hundreds of secondary students at Fulton, Kal, Seaton, and VSS had the opportunity to register for free transit, helping remove barriers to school, activities, work, and community involvement.

The initiative has roots in a student-led CARE project launched in 2024 by students (Haylee Andal and Jade Ha) from Clarence Fulton Secondary School through the Climate Action Ripple Effect (CARE) program.

Today, students across Vernon are benefiting from a vision that began with two students who saw a need and took action. Their work is a powerful example of how student voice and leadership can create meaningful change in our community!

October is National Principals’ Month!

During the month of October, we celebrate the dedication, leadership, and care of our principals and vice-principals. They help create positive learning environments and support students, staff, and families across SD22. Each day they inspire a love of learning, promote social-emotional well-being, and help shape the next generation of leaders and change-makers. So let's express our appreciation to these exceptional individuals who make a real difference in our schools and communities!
