A massive congratulations and thank you to Mikayla who recently completed a work experience with Garth Homer Society through the United Way Work Experience Opportunities Grant, learning about social media! Many of the pieces you’ve seen recently have been created by Mikayla as a part of her time working with us.

An Employment Services client herself, learning more about how GHS supports clients was a highlight for Mikayla, including “learning how others with disabilities develop their skills with Garth Homer. I was blown away with how fair everyone was treated and the clients have a blast.”

After expressing an interest in finding more opportunities to gain experience and build skills for his resume, Alex joined the volunteer placement at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre soup lunch, serving desserts, helping with clean up, and building relationships with other volunteers.

Through this experience, he has focused on developing his time management skills, interpersonal skills, and cultural awareness, teamwork, as well as improving his personal care!

Today, on World Cerebral Palsy Day, let’s remember that inclusion isn’t about simply making space for people, it’s about making sure everyone has the opportunity to participate, contribute, and belong.

Accessibility is a fundamental part of inclusion, and small changes can make a meaningful difference. When we create environments where everyone can participate, everyone benefits.

Today is a reminder to keep challenging barriers, listening to lived experiences, and building a world where accessibility and inclusion are part of how we do things, not an afterthought.
