Starting on Tuesday, Oct. 27, the Cariboo Fire Centre in partnership with the Williams Lake First Nation and the Cariboo-Chilcotin Natural Resource District, will conduct a prescribed burn approximately nine kilometres west of Williams Lake and north of Highway 20. Burning may continue periodically until Nov. 10.

This prescribed burn is done to reduce wildfire risk around Williams Lake and the surrounding area and support a properly functioning ecosystem.

The burn will cover approximately 10 hectares in the Esler Road area north of Highway 20.

Smoke and flames may be visible to those travelling along Highway 20, Dog Creek Road and Bond Lake Road. Firefighters will remain on site until there is no risk of the fire spreading and will return on additional days for mop-up operations to ensure the fire is out. Smoke from within the perimeter of the burn may be highly visible for up to 24 hours after ignition, and some minimal smoke may be visible up to seven days after ignition.

For more information on this project, see the BC Wildfire Service information bulletin: https://blog.gov.bc.ca/bcwildfire/prescribed-burn-planned-near-esler-road-3/

Effective at 12 p.m. PDT on Friday, Oct. 2, the Category 2 and 3 open fire prohibitions and associated restrictions will be rescinded in the Cariboo Fire Centre, including the Tsilquot’in Declared Title Area. This means open burning will be permitted throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre.

Check with your local government or other jurisdictional authorities before lighting a fire of any size and abide by any bylaws or restrictions that are in place in your area. The public is encouraged to continue exercising caution with the use of any open fire.

Burning must be done in a safe and responsible manner and in accordance with the Wildfire Act and Wildfire Regulation.

Have Your Say on Wildfire Resiliency!

The Cariboo Regional District is developing Community Wildfire Resiliency Plans (CWRPs) for Electoral Areas A, B, C, I, J and K to identify wildfire risks and recommend actions to help reduce wildfire impacts in our communities.

We want to hear from you!

Do you know of areas where wildfire risk is a concern? Are there roads that could make evacuation difficult? Do you have ideas for reducing wildfire risks in your community?

Your local knowledge and experiences can help inform the plans and identify priorities for future wildfire resiliency work.
