1. When did you start with the WLFD?

I started with WLFD this past spring at the end of April 2026.

2. Why did you join?

I have always been interested in firefighting but never had the opportunity to pursue it. It looked like a role I could see myself in and was something that served the community I live in, which makes me proud to do. Firefighters are people who work for those around them, and I wanted to be a part of that special group and learn to expand my skills as a person of safety and reliability.

3. What is your favourite thing about being a firefighter?

I couldn’t nail it down to one thing, but the education and the people I get to work with. Becoming a team member and building new relationships within the department is highly rewarding. I love having a surrogate family in Williams Lake and never thought about that side of firefighting until I started with WLFD. The trucks (incredible machines) and tools are pretty neat to see in action. I can’t wait to learn even more on my way to becoming fully certified.

4. What do you like to do outside of the fire hall?

I love to be outside, surrounded by nature with my wife and three dogs. If I am able to go on a big nature walk, it is a good day. I absolutely love to go rock climbing. It is spectacular! Being active in sports, filmmaking, and writing are all interests of mine. Aiming to start whittling soon, too.

New night, same commitment. WLFD training nights have moved to Wednesdays, so our weekly training posts are moving with them.

Aerial rescue starts with properly positioning the ladder truck before deploying the aerial. From the operator at the ground controls to the firefighters at the tip, clear communication, precise movements and teamwork are essential to reaching people safely at heights. Regular practice keeps our skills sharp and our crews ready.

This weeks is Monisha Dharmaraj.

When did you start with the WLFD?

I joined the fire department at the end of April 2026 and somehow convinced myself this was a great idea. šŸ˜‚

Why?

I wanted to challenge myself, learn something completely outside of my comfort zone, and be part of something where I can help out the community that I live in. Plus, who doesn’t want an excuse to be on a fire truck?

What is your favourite thing about being a firefighter?

The people, for sure. The family that we have here. I love the feeling of being part of this family and knowing that everyone has each other’s back. I also love that there’s always something new to learn. I don’t think I’ve ever left the fire hall without learning something new or getting a little more comfortable doing something that scared me before. And obviously, the sirens are pretty cool.

What do you like to do outside of the fire hall?

Anything outdoors: pickleball, softball, kayaking, paddleboarding, hiking, camping, you name it. Basically, if it involves being outside and there’s even a slightly questionable decision involved, I’ll probably be interested. šŸ˜‚

This weeks is Nic Flinton.

1. When did you start with the WLFD?
I started with the Fire Department at the end of April 2026.

2. Why did you join?
I had thought about joining when I first turned 19, but then I ended up moving to Prince George for school. Once I moved back to Williams Lake in the fall of 2025, I would see the fire department out in the community, as well as on social media, and thought it would be a great way to represent the community, and also challenge myself in ways I haven’t before.

3. What is your favourite thing about being a firefighter?
My favourite thing about being a firefighter is the team feeling that surrounds the Williams Lake Fire Department. Everyone is always working together and is always willing to help each other, whether that be with training, or with things outside of the fire department.

4. What do you like to do outside of the fire hall?
Outside of the fire hall, I play hockey for the Williams Lake Stampeders during the winter, and slow pitch softball in the summer. I also like to hunt, fish, and camp.

Last Tuesday, members of Williams Lake Fire Department took part in a live emergency response exercise at the Williams Lake Regional Airport.

Exercises like this give our members the opportunity to train outside of our regular practice environment and work alongside the other agencies and airport personnel we would rely on during a real emergency.

The scenario allowed crews to put our response procedures into practice, work through communication and coordination between agencies, and get valuable hands-on experience with an airport emergency response.

A big thank you to the Williams Lake Regional Airport, RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services, airport staff, airline partners, security personnel, flight services and the volunteer actors who helped make the exercise possible.

Training together now helps us work better together when it counts.
