Yesterday, our community came together to mark Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We began with the Thunderbird Medicine Drum Group and a community walk, then spent the day learning, sharing, and taking part in workshops. Meegwetc to Vanessa Brousseau for her presentation and for sharing her knowledge and experience.

A special moment was the unveiling of Every Child Matters mural made by JP Mathias —a lasting reminder to honour our children, including those who never made it home. After the reveal, we gathered at Amo Ososwan School Gym to listen to Survivors share their stories. We closed the day with a community feast. We honour all Survivors and their families, and carry their stories with us.

On the same day, LPFN served formal notice on the Sûreté du Québec, Quebec’s Ministry of Internal Security, and Public Safety Canada. The notice calls for an adequate, continuous, culturally safe police presence in Winneway, including interim 24/7 coverage within 15 days, and a commitment within 30 days to restore and maintain an Anicinabe police service, operational by March 31, 2028.

Truth and reconciliation must lead to concrete action. We will continue to stand together, remember, and speak up for our children, our families, and our future. 🧡

🕊️ In Loving Memory of Frank Polson 🕊️

Long Point First Nation extends its heartfelt condolences to all family members, extended family, friends and acquaintances on the passing of Frank Polson, a respected artist, community member, and proud Anicinabe whose work touched countless lives both within our Nation and far beyond. LPFN Council and all the staff would like to extend their sincerest condolences to Council member, Mr. Sky Polson, son of the late Frank Polson.

A gifted Woodland artist and the founder of Sky Dreamers Studios, and a renowned artist whose work was recognized internationally, Frank dedicated his life to sharing Anicinabe stories, teachings, and values through his art. His paintings reflected the interconnectedness of all living things, drawing upon our traditions, culture, and relationship with the land. Through his creativity, he helped bring greater understanding and appreciation of Indigenous art and identity across Canada and internationally.

Many will remember Frank's remarkable achievements, including the honour of designing the special Indigenous-themed logo for the Montreal Canadiens. His work also extended to many other major projects throughout his distinguished career. While these accomplishments brought his work to a national and international audience, those who knew Frank understood that his greatest legacy was the passion, humility, and cultural pride he carried throughout his life and shared with future generations.

Long Point First Nation would also like to recognize and honour the important contributions of Mr. Frank Polson, whose vision and dedication led to the creation of the First Nations Identification (ID1N) label. Through his work, the ID1N symbol became a trusted and meaningful way to clearly and verifiably authenticate First Nations businesses and entrepreneurs. His commitment to supporting Indigenous economic development and promoting the recognition of First Nations enterprises leaves a lasting legacy that will continue to benefit communities for generations to come.

Frank's artistic and cultural contributions have left a lasting mark on Long Point First Nation and the broader Indigenous community. His legacy will continue to inspire artists, youth, and all who experience the beauty and meaning found within his work.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Frank's family, relatives, friends, and all who are mourning his passing during this difficult time.

In his memory and in respect to the family, our flags will be flown at half-mast for the coming days.

May our Creator, the Great Spirit, guide him on his journey to the Spirit World.

Madjacin Frank Polson. 🕊️

Madjacin Frank Polson. 🕊️
